Chapter 51 - Ronove

The Wolf Queen's blade and the demon king's greatsword showed no mercy to each other as they both came in contact. They were both expecting to make it through such a night as this one, and none of them were expecting to be butchered. Lagertha fearlessly swung her blade against Ronove as she continued thinking about her only friend. The young hunter, who followed the Wolf Queen during his travels, could only think about her surviving against the demon king. Brant was still gravely injured from fighting Mundis, yet his strength was slowly coming back to him.

The night continued as Lagertha and Ronove showed unbridled hate against each other with their duel. Their rage and determination to survive the night became visible in their sight as the full moon shines upon the castle. Lagertha's sword knew all the tricks and special moves that most demon kings used. Her blade also knew the souls of her victims would slice through the power of their kin. They both dodge, parry, and counter each other's vigorous attacks and fatal blows.

Ever since the Demon Wolf took the throne of Midland, he gave his immense to all the demon kings. The dark power and massive sorcery of Mephiles breezed through the minds and souls of every demon king on Earth. Ronove showed no fear against any human standing in his path; especially against the Wolf Queen. What Ronove did not know is that Lagertha is not like any human he has ever seen or known. The king of Clegane does everything in his power to defend his castle and defeat his new opponent.

Unfortunately, Lagertha was not the mortal who would surrender so easily before his presence. Her mere appearance was enough to make even those she swore to protect be afraid of the power she holds. Suddenly, Lagertha becomes strong enough to make Ronove be pushed back and lose a bit of balance. In one complete year of reigning in the name of Mephiles, he has seen nobody throw him off balance. He still holds his blade in his hand to land a blow against the Wolf Queen, yet he loses some strength.

"They were right. You are the daughter of my lord and master. I can see why most of our armies are slowly fading away," Ronove said.

"You have been doomed ever since you lost the ability to leave your castle and face me. Such a fatal flaw is why I still hold this sword in my hands. And you wonder why other demon kings have already died after fighting me," Lagertha said.

"You will suffer an eternity for this, queen of the wolves. King Mephiles will bathe in your blood, and he will devour your soul and use it to smother your lover to death. Your father will not protect you, just as you could not protect that young hunter."

"Do not dare speak of my friend! You will find no mercy from me, servant of Hell. Your days of tormenting the people of Clegane end here!"

"Kill me... and your doom is at hand. Time after time, you fought against the other kings of this earth. But you will never truly succeed in your journey. In the end, you will fall to your knees and surrender to the one who will make a new beginning for the people of Earth. For you are no queen of the wolves. You're nothing but the queen of failure."

Lagertha heard enough of Ronove's blasphemy with his words towards her, and she was ready to deliver the killing blow. The Wolf Queen had no reason to hear another word from the demon king of Clegane. Every word out of his mouth was like poison to her ears; every word from Ronove made Lagertha more ticked off. She continues pointing her longsword at his face and walks even closer to make her face be the last thing he will ever see. She walks close enough to be certain she will give Ronove a clean cut in the throat before the night ends.

"I've heard enough from you, demon king. Your service to Mephiles brings me agony and pain. I will return what was given to me on that fateful night," Lagertha said.

"In the body of a wolf or a human, you are unchanged, daughter of King Mephiles. But let it always be so that your power will not save everyone. Your arrogance and betrayal in your family make you fall deeper into the darkness," Ronove said.

"I will not inherit his evil nature. I will hunt him down right after I finish killing the rest of those who share the same power as you do. My blade slashed the body of Mundis... it will take pleasure in tearing you asunder," she said.

"What are you but a miserable pile of secrets? Let's have it then. I am Ronove, the king of Clegane. You are just a human being, and you will never, ever see the light of day again."

This time, Ronove is the one who raises his sword first against his opponent, and his strength increases. Thanks to the magic of Mephiles, the demon king had every reason to strike true against his mighty foes. Even if none of the humans proved to be a challenge, Ronove appeared to have met his match with Lagertha. The Wolf Queen defends herself against every blow with her longsword, which never seems to crack. She dodges every blow that seems like it would sever her head from her shoulders.

During that time, it seems as if Ronove grew back with all of his strength to fight and kill the daughter of Mephiles. The king of Clegane believed the Demon Wolf would be pleased to see his daughter's head on a spike. But he never knew the king of Midland loved his daughter more than anyone else in the world. He only wanted to hide his appearance from his daughter; he did not want her to see him for the man he truly is. Ronove ignores the fate that awaits him and continues fighting back against Lagertha before the night is over.

The Wolf Queen understood the type of challenges that await her by the time she finishes this duel. Bloodbringer was such a blade that never disappointed its master with onslaughts and duels. She rolls past the next powerful attack and finds her way towards Ronove's weak spot. The weak points of demon kings would always be on the back, the neck, or even the chest if Lagertha gets lucky. She wastes no time in making sure the deed is done as she continues swinging her blade around.

Lagertha plunges her sword right into Ronove's back, and she watches the blade go through his back to his chest. She then pulls the sword out and watches the king's blood splatter and stain the floor. The Wolf Queen grew tired of just waiting for something to happen; she wanted this madness and eternal darkness to end. She loathed the vision of her best friend suffering under the dark magic that Mephiles wrought upon the earth. Her blade made her journey nearly impossible for anybody else to complete during this age of endless nights.

Then Lagertha charges at Ronove's chest and starts swinging her longsword, and she awaits the inevitable. She makes sure her blade makes the demon king's blood and gore leave his senseless body. The Wolf Queen refused to give mercy to any person or creature who paid homage to Midland's king. The lord of the earth expected much from this new powerful enemy that his servants made. Little did he know of the fates of his generals that would quickly come for them.

With all of her rage and power, Lagertha pushes her longsword deep into Ronove's body and takes it out to slice off his arms. She watches the demon king's arms fly away and end up all over the blood-stained ground. Because of how challenging the duel was, the Wolf Queen noticed only a few scars visible on her body. They were only minor scratches that felt more like a bite from a fly than a stab in the chest. She took pleasure in showing no mercy to all of those who have wronged both her and Brant.

"Take notice, Wolf Queen. Your fate is much darker and more terrible than the fates of humans. You're destined to end up sharing the same fate as your father," Ronove said.

"I know there's more of you out there. I know full well that you're all servants of Mephiles. You're not the first demon king I've slain, and you will not be the last," Lagertha said.

"The next one who sits on a throne is just as strong and wild as I. To get to him... you'll have to sacrifice the one thing you hold dear. You'll have to sacrifice... the one man you love more than anyone," he said.
