As the eerie silence filled the hallways within Suginur Prison, no one was as driven as Lero Bentom at that current moment. With it currently nighttime and a single light within the cell still on for the moment, the man was holding up a newspaper against the light. Already knowing how sick the prison warden was, Lero could read the top headline of the prisoner's paper: Another Bomb Test In The South? What Destructive Powers Await?
Despite what one would think, it appeared that Youden had little care about such news transpiring within the nation. The man must have been so confident in what weapon he was advising the creation of, that it mattered little to the outside world. And that was before he even thought about Thoam. That poor old man was gone, likely reduced to atoms.
Flipping to the next page, Lero saw a vast selection of pictures taken and printed of the destruction. Miles upon miles of destroyed and charred desert land, from a single object. The paper even included captions for the names of the remaining bodies there, which caused Lero to scan through faster. His eyes finally went near the bottom of the list and saw his name. Thoam Halling, or what was left of him. The caption of his name said something along the lines of being put in the epicenter of the test, as the man had attacked Youden. Covering his mouth, Lero just stared at the blurry picture of a charred hand or what appeared to be one. Just like that he was gone.
"I failed you." the man muttered just as all the prison lights went off for the night.
Barely able to see anything else, Lero took a shallow breath before crumbling the paper up. Everything that he had worked for in the last few weeks was almost all for nothing. Except for one thing. That staying here regardless was going to get him killed one way or another.
"Even without you, bloody damn, I just can't stop here." Lero threw the paper to the corner and pulled himself up, "I'm going to make sure you didn't die in vain. I will escape this place of suffering."
Not saying another word, the man slid into his shoddy bedding, just as a guard illuminated his room, before continuing his rounds. One would think that there would be no hope in a situation like this, except for the life lesson it taught Lero then and there. You truly had to fend for yourself in this world, because you never knew when even those you trust and support can disappear in a flash. But his time would come soon, as this was only the beginning.
