Chapter 14 - Chapter 13

After all was over and they were dismissed, Dorothy sent for Jessica in her chambers. Upon arrival, she thanked her so much for what she had done and praised her for being a good soldier and guardian of the throne.

Jessica on the other hand did not buy that. She was now certain that, the Princess and the Captain were lovers and that is why Dorothy had to thank her. She was now after hearing it directly from Dorothy's mouth.

"Thank you for your acknowledgements and compliment my princess. I am honored to be at your service," responded Jessica.

"It's okay Jessica. I have realized that you are not only best at serving me but also serving the people of Kamu and the crown as well," added Dorothy.

"For that, I am grateful my princess but, there is this question I have wanted to ask you for quite some time now." Jessica continued.

"What question Jessica? You are free to ask me any that you please," said the Princess.

"For some time now, ever since the King's message to Lampa, I have been wondering who could have told you before me because, the reaction you exhibited was not that of a surprised person. Later, after I met the Captain from your chambers I knew he must have been the one. The question was why he had to do all this but then I thought you two might be in love. After the attack in Lampa, I was more convinced as you two seemed so close. Now, this proves to me that you love the Captain, is this not true? Jessica asked.

"Wow! I must say that I am impressed Jessica. You are one hell of a spy. What makes you think I will not accuse you of stocking and punish you as I please?" Dorothy asked Jessica.

"Cut to the chase my Princess. This cat is out of the bag. I am a woman… remember? Moreover, I was in love once as well. I know when one is in love. This is one cat you can never keep in the bag anymore," added Jessica.

"Alright Jessica; I am in love with the Captain. It has been quite some time now since we fell in love. This I had told no other living soul and I expect you to keep it a secret. After all, you saved the day and you deserve to know," said Dorothy.

"Thank you for being honest with me and trusting me. I am happy for you. You know, I understand what it takes and means to be in love," replied Jessica.

"Tell me Jessica, about this lover of yours, what happened?" asked Dorothy.

"It was a sad story. At the start, life was proving to be heaven as we fell in love and promised each other forever. Sad to say, destiny had a different path through your father King Guantai. He found out about our love with this man, a peasant like myself and ordered his execution. The executing warrior was none other but Mwithali's father. Ever since, my life has never been the same again and I swore to avenge my lover's death," narrated Jessica.

"Let me get this straight. Is that the reason why you witnessed against Mwithali? Meaning that, the testimony was not true but you did what you had to do?" said the Princess in surprise.

"I guess we all have our dark sides after all. You shouldn't play with fire and expect not to get burnt and should you carry it in your bosom and expect not to burn your clothes," said Jessica.

"I am so sorry for you Jessica. I too would have done the same thing. Now that we know each other's inner most secrets and weaknesses, it's to the best of our interest to keep our mouths shut and forget we ever had this conversation," concluded the Princess.

"Yes my princess. I swear to utter not a single word to anybody. Excuse me." replied Jessica.

Jessica walked out of the room leaving Dorothy staring at her in the manner to suggest surprise. That was that. Dorothy and Jessica knew each other's secret to the roots. This meant that, their friendship was tightened further but also, they were each other's greatest threat. One word speaking about any of those secrets, and the game could be over for either.

Meanwhile, Joseph was told the good news while still in the dungeon. He was also told he was not to be acquitted before Mwithali and his warriors' trial. Two days later, the council was summoned and they met for the trial of Mwithali and his crew. During this day, Joseph was fetched from the dungeon for the hearing of the trial.

After the witnesses were called to the stand again and testified against Mwithali, the council found them guilty. They were convicted of bearing false witness against the Captain and treason for trying to overthrow the King. Mwithali and his warriors were taken back to the dungeon again in wait for execution. Joseph was set free and his Captainship restored.

He rejoiced in praise to the gods for sparing his life and giving him a chance to love and save his people. Mwithali and his warriors were given one week to the execution to get a chance with their families. It was not usual even in situations like these for the Kamu people to be with their loved ones without looking over their shoulders. It happened so because the Princess had requested the same for Joseph. On the outside, preparations were on going for the execution at the arena.

Joseph, just after his release made sure to set up a private meeting with Dorothy. He succeeded and upon meeting, he asked her of who the guardian angel was that had the case turn against Mwithali. Back in his mind though, he knew that his lover the Princess could not let him go down that easily. She told him of her involvement in the whole plan. They both appreciated each other and took advantage of the privacy to make up for the few days they had lost.

Afterwards, it was time to talk about their mission and set it back on track. Back in the dungeons, the warrior that testified against Mwithali was still in wait for the Princess's favor to get him off the noose. Indeed, the Princess was honest enough to keep her word to this warrior.

She managed to get him off the execution but Judas had to serve time in the dungeon. After all, he did lie to the King and the throne and had to pay for it. After he agreed to this, the Princess warned him that if he ever mentioned it to anyone, he was a dead man. At this point, she had him play by her bidding. He may have never messed with a King's maiden but he was snatched from the jaws of death.
