Inside James went and she banged the door behind him. This is the time he saw hell. The noise from the door echoed around the small dark cube in the name of a room without anywhere to escape through. The room was almost twelve feet high and had a small window the size of an A4 paper at the very top.
This automatically put sunlight and fresh air in the tertiary class of necessities. He could hardly see the person next to him. His eyes had not yet adjusted to the darkness in the cube. In fact, the room was so dark that he could hardly tell day and night. This was not all. The odor from the room was to another level. It smelled so awful. This was because; the room did not only serve as a holding cell but also the sanitation. There was a small bucket at one end of the room and that was the sanitation.
Still in this confusion, he heard someone clear his throat. His heart almost touched his toes. His hair stood still and despite the cube being as cold as ice, he started sweating and shivering at the same time. To some extent, this shock helped him overcome the cold but he knew what was ahead of him was not good at all. All that was running through his mind was whether the law applied inside the small cube. Sadly, he was about to find out the hard way.
Since he could hardly see, he walked away from the sound only to stumble upon what he would describe as a giant. It was at this moment that his eyes got power and he saw through the darkness as if he had night goggles on. He just saw what he described as Goliath of the 20th century. Were it not that he was a Christian and knew more about Goliath and David, he was to be convinced of him being alive.
Slowly he stepped back looking straight to this giants eyes not skipping a glance. Just before he got far enough, he found himself dangling with his feet in the air. He could not tell how he got there. This giant had only one question for him. He was concerned about what James had done to get himself in there. At the time, he could hardly speak. As he struggled to get words out, the huge man threw him right straight to the sanitation. This was to be James bedroom, living room and everything as long as he was in that cell.
The giant then told him with a deep rough voice that the cell was no place for him. He told him he smelled like unbaked bread. Whatever this meant James did not know but what he knew was it had saved him a lot of trouble. He coiled himself slowly at the corner and hardly made a sound. In fact, he was even afraid of breathing but the good thing was the giant had finished his orientation or interrogation. As far as that day, he knew he was fine.
It is true that revenge is a two way street. Had James remembered this saying, he could have kept it in his pants and waited for Vero to explain herself. It was already too late. Even after betraying her and sleeping with Carol, she was the only person James hoped could help him. She went back to her hostel to try to get people who could testify to prove James innocence but fate was not by their side. At the time of the incident, there was nobody in the hostel that could testify in James' favor. Her other roommates were out too. Only Carol was in the room that day. Being a weekend, most of the girls too had gone out for various agendas.
The following day, Vero went to see James at the police station. She needed to let him know that there were no witnesses. She also prepared a meal for him. He might have betrayed her but she could not just let him suffer alone. She had to do everything within her powers to get him off the hook. She also wanted to share with him her thought of their way forward as well as get James' ideas.
He did not seem to have any ideas. His experience in the cell that one night had frozen his mind and could not think of anything else. Being in the cell for the night was very bad for him. Vero herself could notice the difference in him within that one night. She felt sorry and bad that he had to go through all the trouble. If only she had her way to help him faster, she would have done it. Indeed, she truly loved James. Her love for James was the true definition of true love and proved that indeed, it existed.
Telling his parents was the last thing he had to do. It was not an option then. He knew not any other person that could help him. After he had been accused of rape back in the day when he was a teacher, he could hardly have anybody to approach. If he mentioned this to those who knew of his past accusations, it would be so bad and no one would believe he had not done it. It was only Vero's ideas that could get him off the hook or at least try.
Lucky for him, Vero had an uncle who happened to be a lawyer. She promised him that she was going to talk to him to help them with the case. Her uncle was their best option because he did not have money to pay a lawyer. At least, Vero's uncle would do it free or, at least until after the case was over. James as usual apologized to her for having messed up so bad and brought her with him. He also begged her not to let her parents know about the case.
She promised not to tell his parents. She also let him know that, with the nature of the case, it was hard to keep it a secret. Eventually his parents would find out about it. According to her, she advised him to tell them but he disagreed. He said that he needed time before they could know about it. He also told her not to worry about it for when the time came, he was to take care of it. That was exactly what Vero did. She made sure not to tell his parents and trusted him to take care of it when the time came for him to do it.
The visiting hours were over and it was time for James to go back to the cell and Vero to leave the Station. On Monday the following day, all those that had been arrested over the weekend were to be arraigned in court. James was one of them. Vero had the task of letting her uncle know about it before James was taken to court. Lucky for her, it was on a Sunday and she was sure that her uncle was at home.
