Chapter 11 - Chapter 11

One day as James and his friend were at their best at Matiku Bar kissing bottle after another, James happened to collide with a new friend in his life. As known, inside the four walls of a bar, there is no one older. In other words, the etiquette of the young and the old does not apply here.

This man was no youth but claimed to know James quite very well. This caught James' attention and wanted to know more about this man. They sat on the same table to have a drink together as they talked.

On the other end, James' friend Joseph had left to be with one of his women and so he was not around as James was meeting this other friend.

For James, it was time to get to know this new friend in-depth.

"Yes my friend, you said that you know me very well. As it seems I do not know who you are, or at least I do not know your name. How about us starting there; what is your name?" James asked the man.

"Okay, my man. I will tell you my name if this will make you comfortable. I am Mr. Japheth but you can call me Jeff as my friends call me," said Japheth.

"Now Jeff, tell me what is this so special in me or about me that has interested you to the extent of wanting me as a friend?" asked James.

"My friend, do not be on your toes with me. I mean you no harm and do not play man and woman with me men. I am a man like you," said Japheth.

"Ha! Ha! Ha! That is a nice joke you made my friend. Now you got my attention. But why don't you buy me a drink now and we talk." said James.

"Do not worry about beer my friend. You will have as many as you can. I will make your day today. It is my treat," said Japheth.

"Thanks, men. It is very rare that we find someone as good as you are. Indeed you will make my day," said James.

"Now James, tell me, what do you do at the moment to earn a living?" asked Japheth.

"Ooh my man, I am at Ruaki Mission Hospital where I am working as a statistics officer. Of course, that is not what I wanted to be doing men. Only that life sucks sometimes but I am happy," said James.

"Well, at least you have a job man. Many are searching for such an opportunity but cannot have it. Embrace it. And if I may ask, why do you say that you did not want this?" asked Japheth.

"Hey men, my fountain needs to be refilled and then we can continue," said James.

"What do you mean my friend? As I told you, I am an old man and I do not understand all you say in parables. Be simple and tell me what you mean." said Japheth.

"Ooh! You old people; I need another drink man. Get me another bottle." said James.

"Okay, if that's what you mean you have no trouble. Just continue. The waiter is coming," said Japheth.

"Well, about me not wanting this; you know this life has so many rats in the name of people. They are these rats that ruined my life," said James.

"What do you mean by rats having you ruin your life?" asked Japheth.

"I mean they had me, kicked out of school. Some rats lied to my parents about me in school and the worst about it is that they believed it. I think they too are rats," said James.

"Just be clear. I do not seem to understand what you mean Mr. James. Try to be straight forward," said Japheth.

"As you can see, I am getting totally drunk and I need someone to buy my drink tomorrow. If you, Mr. Jeff want my other story, come tomorrow. Asta l…l…la V…vista man." said James as he stood up with his bottles changing the table.

"Well then man, I see I have touched a critical point and you are not in a very good condition to narrate the story to me. Have it your way. Enjoy your beers and I will meet you here tomorrow," said Japheth.

"Blessed be thee for thy goodness a…a…and…whatever, have a safe journey home, Mr. Jeff," said James.

Mr. Japheth went home and James was left in the pub making love to his bottles. He stayed here until it was 11 o'clock at night. It was time for the pubs to be closed. He had to go home. At the condition he was, he could not walk home by himself though his house not being far.

Luckily enough, due to the frequent visits to this place for the drinks, they were well known. The bartender called his friend Joseph to escort him home. After they reached home, James had not more to say but to sleep and leave the talks for the next day.

Early the following morning, James prepared himself to go to work. He could not have time to tell Joseph of his new friend that morning but promised to do it in the evening. At work, James did not have much to do in the office this day. His computer was out for repairs and maintenance.

This reason made James day at work short. He actually had nothing to do that afternoon. He requested permission from his boss to go home. He was granted and left. He later met his friend and told him about the man he had met the previous night.

He told him that the man was very good and more so had no problems at all with buying the drinks. He asked Joseph whether he could agree to meet this friend with him and Joseph agreed as long as he heard there was beer to be bought.

As usual, James did not have much to do whenever he was out of work. That afternoon he decided to clean some of his clothes as he was waiting for the famous Mututho hour. Though the afternoon seemed long, it was finally over and it was time to get drunk.

To Matiku bar, they went with his friend with the hopes of meeting this new friend of James. They waited for him having their beers as usual. Japheth did not show up until after seven o'clock. Finally, James could get the beer down his throat comfortably.
