Chapter 8 - chapter 8. The calm before the storm

William was extremely stressed. His eyes were red and his body was swaying left and right, he looked like he would collapse at any moment

The guards standing in front of Mr Wells office were quite shocked to see the a researcher in such a state. He usually looked so very vibrant, full of life, but now he looked like a husk of his former self

"What could have happened to him?"

"Beats me, but it can't be anything good"

Willam immediately collapsed on one of the couches in the office groaning

"Why this quite unbefitting of you Mr McGrath" Mr Wells says

"Can it!" William retorted

"I'll forgive your insolence cause of the work your doing for me" Mr Wells in a cold voice

"Yeah, yeah, what did you call me for?"

"Are you aware of the recent energy spikes in the environment recently?"

"No, I really don't care, dang research is eating up my time and energy"

"You should care, after all this is related to the door...and your secret research work"

Willam sat up straight his interest piqued "What are the details?"

Mr Wells turned around to face William "Yesterday at twelve am, a blue energy was emitted from the middle of a Larch tree encirclement. After the beam was emitted a blue mist covered the area of the forest which the beasts have created their nests"

William shook his head "Oh no, my poor aching head..."

Mr wells raised his eyebrows

"I know what's next, your gonna ask me to beef up the domes strength aren't you?"

"Precisely"

"But how does all this relate to the door?"

"First of all its not just one door we found, we also found caves that lead into a network of tunnels that lead to similar doors. Yesterday when the beam of energy was released it was absorbed by the door nearest to it near immediately and it opened it"

"Wait, wait, first of all there are more doors?" William asked scared "and how do you know about this? when I was heading here no one was talking about it"

"I placed guards at the entrance of each tunnel, I'm not stupid" Mr Wells replied ignoring the first question

William felt exasperated and mentally drained "I don't see how this relates to my previous research but I'll do my best to find out more on what's going on"

William staggered onto his feet and tried to leave

Mr Wells returned to watching the city from above "Be careful of 'the calm'"

William smiled weakly while he left staggering the office

'Mavis...' William thought happily

Aiden turned around on his bed and it he suddenly opened his eyes and sat up. He panted uncontrollably as he remembered the aura he had just spoke with

He remembered the words of the aura 'Whay did it mean?' Aiden thought he got up and looked at the clock hanging from the wall and saw it was around three am.

He went to his calendar and checked what day it would be in a week and five days. He saw it was the day of the wolf hunter festival

The wolf hunter festival is a day that is celebrated to remember Owen Hansen, the greatest hunter to have lived

Owen Hansen was a first generation hunter with the rare wolf morph ability. He was the only hunters to have taken down a rare type beast at the calm level

Beasts had various ways of classifying there powers and behaviors. The classification by behavior was Frenzied, Feral and Calm, while power was classified by common, uncommon, rare and mythical

The strongest was mythical while the most dangerous type was the Calm. The beasts were fundamentally different from morphs due to various factors.

One of the factors was that they had access to a strong ability which was referred to as magic. Researchers did not know the reason why the beasts could use magic but knew that those who could use it efficiently were extremely dangerous

Owen was very respected as he defeated a Calm with magic that could manipulate space. Sadly Owen disappeared after the battle. People hold this festival to honour his sacrifice

Aiden was still baffled as to why the spirit would appear during the festival. Aiden sad down on his bed he couldn't wrap his head around all that was going on

Aiden needed to clear his head. He moved to his closet and changed into his normal grey shorts and shirt and his black hoodie with a moon on the back

He tried to open his door but it wouldn't open. Aiden wasn't surprised as this wasn't the first time he was locked in his room after elven pm. He moved towards his window and opened it up then jumped out of it.

The house wasn't that high off the ground and thanks to his martial arts training helped condition his body to a point where jumping from such a height wouldn't harm him.

He walked around the area trying to clear his mind off all that was going on in just two days. He felt lost, sad, angry and lonely.

Aiden kept walking until he eventually got to a point where there were no more houses and a wife field. Ever since the virus outbreak people had been more in touch with nature. Aiden heard a gentle humming and moved towards the source there he saw a beautiful girl wearing a white flowing dress, with long waist length brown hair tried in a ponytail.

She sat under a single street light in the middle of field humming a sweet tone

Aiden felt like the tune was familiar but he couldn't remember from where he heard it. Unknowingly he moved towards the girl

The girls ears twitched and she looked back and saw Aiden approaching

"Aiden..." the girl said as she stood up and looked at him

Aiden knew it was Shayla and moved towards her "How...how are you?" he said looking away

"I'm alright" she said as she sat down and turned her back towards him. Aiden also sat down with his back facing Shayla.

They both say in silence as they looked at the flowers. The air was cold and the flowers petals danced in the cool breeze blowing gently across the field

"Do you remember?" Shayla asked "The time we planted this field together?"

Aiden thought about it but he couldn't remember. He scrunched his face and tried to recall the memory but it seemed as if he never had such a memory "I...I can't"

Shayla's face fell down ward, tears gently streaming from it "Of course you don't, after all the memories you made with Damian and I only bring you pain"

Shayla got up and was about to leave the field "I'll see you later" she said as she moved in the direction of her house

Aiden wanted to stop her but he couldn't just bring himself too

"What have I become?"

"Ding. Objective two complete Mental state is now [Critical stage 3]"
