Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Effect Combination

[Enchant Element]. The skill increases the elemental affinity of its user to one element available at the area.

The drawback of this skill was that the elements it could detect on its own was quite limited. Most of the time it could only detect energies that could be seen with the naked eye.

So what will happen if you pair up this skill with another that specializes with energy detection?

-'Why don't you try using that skill with a combination? That would make your Enchant focus more on its intensity.'

Yoshino Aruven smiled upon remembering those words. He regretted not believing that person before. He should have listened to this advice long ago!

Because the combination enabled him to do this now,

"Enchant Element: Psychic!"

His affinity towards the Psychic element increased.

Element in [Roku Shiki Online] refers to the concept that an individual could control using his or her skills.

In this regard, the term does not only signify the forces of nature like fire, water, earth and air. Nor it exclusively refers to the periodic substances such as Calcium, Iron, and Hydrogen.

Element could also refer to the abstract terms. For example time, space, curse, mirage. And in this instance, psychic.

Meanwhile elemental affinity refers to the ability of an individual to control and cast skill of that particular element. Take Lieutenant Alshura for example, she could use fire skills thus her affinity to the fire element should be the highest.

In addition, a high elemental affinity would enable an individual to gain resistance to that particular element.

"You're joking right? Are you saying you can resist my orders using a single spell? A basic spell?!"

Bando Klein---no, Klein protested in disbelief. Perhaps he was humiliated that his advanced skills were being resisted by a lower tiered person.

Yoshino turned around and faced the officer. He grinned as he answered,

"You better believe it."

The synergy of skills. This refers to the potential that an individual could tap into by combining the effects of various skills. By having a compatible effect arrangement, one could cast effect combinations that was greater than their sum.

In this instance, [Enchant Element] and [Scanner] were working hand in hand. Scanner perceives the psychic element available in the area due to Klein's presence. And this is relayed to Enchant which increases Yoshino's affinity to the target.

Although theoretically this should still not be enough. Thankfully, the Tier suppression of the dungeon had played out as well.

"Tch! So what? Wolves! Take him down!"

AWoo! Awoo! AWOO!

Dozens of Spirit wolves were rushing from the corridor.

"I'll handle them!"

Alshura emerged from the destroyed wall. She manifested five flaming swords around her.

"You! Did I not say to---"

Klein was about to order Alshura to stop. But Yoshino rushed forward to disrupt his casting. He threw a right straight punch.

"No you don't!"

Klein avoided the punch. He then tried to use his orders to call forth monsters.

"Bats! Come---"

"No you don't!"

Yoshino interupted his casting once again.

"Rats, heed my---"

"No you don't!"

Klein tried to order once more. But Yoshino interrupted him again

"You! Die!"

"No you *cough*, *cough* that almost worked!"

Yoshino might have gained an increased resistance against Klein's mind manipulation. But that did not mean he was immune to it.

He was only able to resist that one because the order seemed to be weaker than his previous commands. Perhaps continuous activation of his orders reduced the effectivity of the skill? Regardless if the casting was successful or not?

"What are you doing?! If you can resist his orders then take him down already!"

Alshura was exasperated. Perhaps she was still under the effect of 'not interfering' thus she could only deal with the monsters that was not stated under the orders.

"I was just stalling for time! Now that the clue was claimed, the dungeon will soon disappear. Along with all the monsters inside."

Yoshino tried to reason out. But Alshura replied,

"Wouldn't that mean also that the Tier suppression will also disappear soon?"

"!"

He had forgotten about that. To be honest, the Captain was supposed to handle this part of the plan. Whether that genius also figured out that Yoshino was aiming to make the dungeon disappear or not, he did try to isolate Klein before. That should have confirmed their tacit agreement, right?

But that was no longer the case here. Yoshino had to deal with this part now!

He then stared at Klein. He suspected that the guy had something to do with this lapse of judgment once again.

"I was just stalling for time, hahaha!"

Klein mocked. He did admit on doing the deed.

Damn it, resistance! Not immunity!

Yoshino reminded himself to still be wary.  He focused at the enemy in front him. The distance was 3 meters.

He fixed his stance. He then casted a different skill. The other one contained on the other sealing stave had also returned to its rightful owner.

"[Weapon Call]!"

Yoshino reached out his right hand forward. A small dimensional rift had opened in front of him. This gate was from his personal pocket dimension. He claimed the item inside it.

Zeta Blade.

A 30 centimeter bladed weapon had come forth. The length of its blade was 20 centimeters.

The item was a knife. Yoshino gripped its handle tightly. This was also the weapon he was most familiar with. He may belong to the Mage class but that does not mean he was not allowed to wield a bladed weapon.

However Klein reacted differently upon seeing the situation,

"A magic weapon?"

"Oh? You can tell? I didn't take you for someone who can discern such detail."

Yoshino smiled. He rushed forward once again. Trying to thrust the weapon towards the officer.

"Tch!"

Klein tried to evade. He seemed to be wary of the one he called a magic weapon. He stepped backwards and distanced himself further. They were now 5 meters apart.

Magic Weapon. An item that was imbued with its own special effect which differentiate them with normal weapons. On some instances these special items could even possess up to three effects.

This was one of the reasons why professionals considered [Weapon Call] as a staple. If one could summon forth a magic weapon that has a powerful effect or has multiple effects, then trading off a skill slot for it was definitely worth it!

Unfortunately Zeta Blade was not that kind of magic weapon. Well, it does have a special effect. Only one.

And Yoshino activated the said special effect.

"[Void Fang]!"

The skill was a non-elemental attack that enables Zeta Blade to become projectile weapon. The user does not need to have throwing skills equipped in order to use this.

Yoshino still belonged to the Mage class after all. He needed to have ranged attacks too!

The thrown weapon flew towards the officer.

"You missed!"

Klein laughed as he evaded the thrown weapon.

"I thought you can still read my mind?"

"Tch! Does it matter? Di---"

"My, my, even you reached Tier 3 without knowing the basics?"

"?"

"[Weapon Call]."

Yoshino activated his skill when he saw that Klein stopped his casting. Perhaps the officer got curious of what he was talking about.

A dimensional rift appeared on his right hand. A 30 centimeter bladed weapon come forth his grasp.

"[Void Fang]."

Yoshino immediately activated the weapon skill. But Klein managed to dodge again. Thus he casted the combination once again.

Weapon Call. Void Fang.

Klein barely dodged the attack this time.

Technically, casting a Basic skill was faster than an Advanced skill. A Tier 3 individual must train rigorously in order to cast an Advanced spell that was faster than a Basic.

Fortunately Klein seemed to have focused more on the potency of his skill rather than its casting time.

That was the reason why Yoshino can disrupt his casting while Klein could not do the same.

Weapon Call. Void Fang.

"This is ridiculous!"

Klein complained. The projectile had grazed his left shoulder.

Of course it was ridiculous. This was other reason why professionals considered [Weapon Call] as a staple.

The skill had high utility value. Meaning that its effect could be compatible to numerous skills available to humanity.

In this instance, if you combine it with a good weapon effect, the skill could be used to give outstanding results!

Technically this was like having an additional skill for the price of only one slot!

As long as you have MP, you can use this combination repeatedly. And once again, Yoshino was a Mage. In other words his MP gauge was higher than an average person.

In addition, the MP consumption of Weapon Call for its subsequent activation was lower. This is because the target item was already around the area.

However, this also had a downside. The skill contained within a weapon could not be cultivated. Meaning the skill within the weapon could not further grow.

Despite that Yoshino continued his barrage of 'ranged' attacks. An opening for a finishing blow was now available!

Yoshino began to accumulate energy. He was aiming to settle this once and for all.

Four-fold Skill Combination!

"[Enchant]: Fire Fang!"

Void Fang had absorbed the fire element present in the field. A blazing projectile went straight to Klein.

"Aaarrghh!"

The officer cried in agony.
