Chapter 45 - Chapter 45

"Why am I doing this again?"

In Jason's hands was a file for a nearly ten year old cold case. Since Lala is currently with Felicia working, and all his college work is caught up. He was lodging around the apartment bored and ducking in and out once in a while for a save or two. That is when his father tossed down the file and suggested he investigate it.

The file in his hands contained a case about Andrew, a man who was murdered and dumped into the river. While the two lead detectives looked into his wife, they didn't put her as the lead suspect. Instead they focused on Giant Dave, a small-time gang member turned serial killer who murdered his victims in a very similar way.

How he murdered them, he would binded their hands and feet before stabbing the spine and putting two bullets in their head and one in the heart. In turn after cleaning up the body he would just dump them into the river like trash before tracking a new victim.

Only after his seventh victim and a messy disposing with a witness, they managed to grab up Giant Dave. After admitting to all his murders, he didn't recognize Andrew which turned the case cold soon after that. Now, Jason found himself backtracking and visiting each scene listed.

"Giant Dave is barely four six, this railing is maybe a couple inches lower." He mumbled to himself as he looked over the river where they said the body was dumped.

While it wasn't impossible for Dave to toss a body over the railing like this, there were a few easier bridges or points to toss the body in for him. There is also a decent amount of traffic and since there are a fair amount of clubs nearby, he doubts it would die down at night. So tossing a body into the river from here is a bit dumb and really eye catching.

'It is eye-catching, no one reported anything. So either it was dumped elsewhere or those that saw just didn't care.' Jason thought.

'The wife wouldn't fare much better. While she is a fair bit taller, Andrew wasn't a small man nearly hundred pounds heavier than her at the time. It also leaves the issue of where or how they managed to learn the Giant Dave kill method since no news reported how.'

"From the dates he was killed around the same time as Dave's last victim." Flipping open the file to see who the witness was, an idea sprouted in his head.

The witness had very similar features to the wife, that were different just enough not to link them if either denied being siblings. Which corresponded with one of the lead investigator thoughts, but they were unable to interview. Since the man shortly died from a drug overdose after relapsing once more.

"Well, I guess all that is left is the wife."

--

After gaining the former wife's current address from his Father. Jason looked around the nicely decorated apartment filled with highly priced antiques and paintings. After the death of her former husband, she ended up marrying a very successful businessman who runs supply chains throughout the country.

"Sorry to ask, but aren't you a bit young to be looking into the old case?"

Now in her early forties, Claire who still looked a few years younger thanks to the diligence of taking care of herself. She was currently sipping on a small glass of tea while her new husband stood behind her rubbing her shoulders. Jack was a few years older than her, but from his racing heart, Jason suspicions instantly shifted from his previous thoughts.

"That may be true." Jason answered. "Now, if I may ask when did you two meet?"

"I believe it was a few months after my and Andrew's wedding. Jack was the best friend of my former husband and just returned from overseas."

'Hmm,' Jason mentally thought before asking a few more questions. By the end, Jack didn't look well and asked to leave the room.

"Now that he is gone, by chance are you related to this man?"

"I don't believe so, but my mother did mention that my father used to climb into others beds."

Thanking her for her time, Jason soon left. He had an idea and was going to pitch it to his father to deal with. If he is right, then poor Claire is going to lose another husband, if not. Well he wasn't a detective in the first place.

"I wonder how the girls' day went?" He asked himself before he heard Liz's voice filled with terror.

"Jason, help!"

Following in the wake was shattered concrete and a sonic boom.

--

On the other side of town inside a supermarket. Mass panic was going on as gunfire rang throughout the store. Crouching behind shelves with a few customers, Liz could basically feel her heart beating out of her chest.

From what she knew before the small group began, three men came in dressed heavily for fairly warm weather. It was enough for a team lead who was up front to mention it over the radio. Normally it wouldn't evolve as it was either a thief who was uncomfortable or some sort of pointless prank.

Only when they were approached, they suddenly pulled out guns and began opening fire on anyone within sight. Which led to those running away basically trampling others as they booked it to the exits. Exits which seemed to be blocked from the outside.

"Are we going to die, Mom?" A small girl asked.

Hushing the small girl by a woman which Liz assumes to be her mother. It was easy to tell the woman was unsure and clearly terrified of what's going on. Especially now that barely any gunfire was going off not letting them know where the shooters were.

"Jason, help!" Liz whispered.

Moments after she whispered this and a few customers looked confused about what she was whispering. They felt the store begin to tremble as a loud bang soon followed as glass could be heard shattering from the front.

After a brief moment of gunfire, the store turned silent until a brave or a dumb soul, Liz didn't know which looked. The three gunmen were down and their weapons crushed into metal balls, but what got most was the black S mark burned into the wall nearby.

Relief soon filled her, Liz smiled as the fear disappeared and joy of still living replaced it. To make it even better, she found Jason outside waiting as a line of squad cars quickly filled the parking lot.

"Thanks Jason."
