Chereads / Crimson Zero / Chapter 3 - The Calamity

Chapter 3 - The Calamity

I look around me and see science equipment and I'm the center of the room is a small glass casing, with my grandfather closest to the glass whereas the other researchers are on computer tablets and computers.

My grandfather looks toward me and waves me over. I look at him with confusion and then look at the glass casing, seeing some sort of black goo inside with wires connected to it which seems to be reading its properties.

"What is it? Is it supposed to be hooked up like that?"

I ask and hearing my voice when I was little.

(Why am I remembering this, is there something I don't know?)

"It's an experiment, it is something we have gotten by unknown means, it's wired up just in case it moves or reads some sort of anomaly. From what we know, it has multiple readings of different elements and chemicals, we're hoping it can become a universal material that can provide renewable energy for everyone across the world, endless power.

He looks at me with a smile and then gets a message on his phone.

"Well, it looks like I have a short meeting to tend to, just stay in here and don't try to break anything, okay kiddo."

He tells me as he pats my head and then he with his colleagues leaves the research area.

I go around and look out the window, seeing many people and researchers walking around, in the distance I see a helicopter flying up from a helipad. I look closer at the window of the helicopter and I see my father waving at me, I wave back, it then flies off and out of my view.

Saddened, I turn around and go to the small glass casing and look at the strange goo. I rub my eyes and as I do so I see it move slightly.

I look at the monitor above it that reads its movements and see that there was a slight reading saying it moved. I look back at the case and the goo has expanded twice as much as it was, it then moved closer to me in the case and expands more and in a matter of seconds it fills up the entire case.

I step back away from it and the glass starts cracking and spewing the goo outside of it, the lights turn red and alarms start blaring. The glass case instantly shatters, letting out this creature. The goo launches towards me and covers me entirely within it, it starts seeping into my skin and is absorbed. As the smallest bit of it is left, the door bursts open and I see my grandfather and in a panic.

"Zandyll, what hap.."

He says as he looks at me and sees the goo get absorbed, he looks at the case and back at me. He grips his hands into fists and then reaches into his pocket and grabs a walkie-talkie, he starts crying and looks at me.

"I'm sorry kiddo, but I have to do this, I love you."

He then runs to me and hugs me.

"Set it off. Set off Protocol Z."

He says into the device and hugs tighter.

Almost 5 seconds later, I feel the building starting to collapse and I see white light surrounding my vision, and I blackout.

I wake up and stand up, feeling sore and tough to move. I look around me and see a crater around me, I then look at myself and see my clothes tattered and ripped. I see a stone sign that was the building's company name just left to rubble. I start climbing the crater and as soon as I get to the top, I see a desolate wasteland with building broken down and destroyed with nobody in sight.

(What happened to this place, it was a city full of people and skyscrapers.)

I start to feel the ground shake and at the center of the crater, I see a small red crystal that within seconds enlarges into a tall crystal that's as tall as a five-story building.

I start to hear something a long distance away and I follow the sound and I see a helicopter, the same one my father rode. The helicopter door opens and my father runs out and hugs me and looks at me to see if I'm okay. He brings me into the helicopter and as I'm going in, I see the name Obsidian on the side.

After several hours of being on the helicopter, we get to a base and there are several hundred people there.

Soon enough people started to have afflictions and somehow gained supernatural abilities, people that are very young to very old had powers, eventually, new people born into the world after the Calamity would gain a power or stay powerless around twelve years old and have no sickness or affliction when acquiring a power. I did not have a power to my knowledge but on my own with my father one day, I soon found out I had a dangerous ability that no one should have.

I never used my powers but I was able to do anything physical since that can pull off an excuse of being a power. Since the systems and devices made can't determine my power, I just say it's given me a higher physical ability. To this day, I've never shown my power to anyone besides my father and Nizaki, and hopefully, no one will ever know what it is.

I wake up having remembered everything after the Calamity, I sit up and look at the terminal and it says it's 3 a.m. I look up and sigh.

"It's gonna be a long day today."
