After the paramedics and the doctor left, Steve stayed back with Joan and her mother. Joan's mother couldn't stop crying, while Joan was just staring into space. Steve decided to call his mother to tell her about what was going on. He figured Joan's mother could use the company of a friend.
"So you mean he is on life support now?" Steve's mother asked for the third time. She was having a hard time believing what Steve had told her about Joan's father's health.
"Yes, mum. And his wife is really distraught at the moment, I was hoping perhaps you could come over?" Steve asked his mother.
"You need not ask, I'm on my way right now," Steve's mother said.
"Okay, mum."
