"I can see you both have made yourself comfortable in MY kitchen." Steve who was now dressed in a sweatpant and a polo t-shirt, stood by the kitchen door, slightly leaning on it with both legs crossed, and his hands dipped in his pocket, as he stared daggers at his mother. But she didn't seem the least bit perturbed by his annoyance.
"So what was it you wanted to discuss with me, that made you come unannounced to my house this morning? And why is Joan's mom here too?" He asked as Joan joined them. She was dressed in a sweatpant and a tank top too.
"What's the hurry, I made you coffee just the way you love it. So let's sit down and drink." Lola announced with a cheerful smile as she sniffled her own mug and walked past them to the dinning, expecting them to follow her.
Joan turned to her mother as she also walked past them, "Mom? Why are you here? How did you even know I was here? Wait, did something happen to dad?" She asked in alarm as she hurriedly followed her mother.
"What would I be doing here if your father isn't fine?" Her mother snapped at her, making it clear she was very disappointed in her, "Now take your mugs and come sit down. We need you both to have a clear head for this conversation." Bisi ordered them both sternly.
"What is all this about?" Steve asked impatiently as they both took the seats opposite their mothers.
"You're both getting married." Lola announced excitedly before they could even get a taste of the coffee.
"What?" They asked simultaneously.
"Getting married? I don't quite follow. Who is getting married?" Joan asked, not understanding what Steve's mom was talking about.
"What are you talking about?" Steve asked, looking just as confused as Joan was.
Lola leisurely took a sip of her coffee before she answered their question, "Bisi why don't you explain them?" She said, smiling at Bisi who looked like she would rather be anywhere else but right there with them.
"Why do I have to be the one to explain?" She asked Lola in a hushed tone.
"Because I have been the one doing all the talking, so it's your turn to explain to them." She whispered back.
"No. You are the one who insisted we tell them, so you might as well explain it to them yourself." Bisi said making Lola sigh.
This was one of the things she disliked about Bisi. Bisi was fond of chickening out of situations whenever things seemed tough.
"They are both our children, so you should explain it to them." Lola insisted, and they both continued to debate in hushed tones, about who was going to be the one to explain to them.
"You both know, we can actually hear you right?" Steve asked in annoyance. He was beginning to get pissed at the two of them.
First of all they had come into his house without his invitation, and as if that wasn't annoying enough they had both stood over their naked form watching them while they slept in that very compromising position, and now his mom was telling them they would have to get married. Was this some sort of joke or something?
"Mom what are you both talking about?" Joan demanded, directing her question to her mom. By now herself and Steve were no longer seated, but they were standing shoulder to shoulder like comrades in war facing their mothers who seemed like the enemy.
"Ahemm." Bisi cleared her throat, "Like Steve's mother here already said, you both are getting married." she said without looking at either of their faces. She feared she might not be able to speak if she looked at their faces, especially her daughter's face.
"Why would we want to get married to each other? Was there ever a discussion where we told either of you that we wanted to get married?" Joan asked the two women, trying hard not to get mad at them.
"It's a decision we all made. By we I mean both your fathers are involved too." Her mom answered.
"Hold on, I still don't get this. So you all just sat together and decided that we should get married? Just like that? Without our own opinion?" Steve demanded angrily. The whole idea wasn't just annoying but it was also a very ridiculous arrangement.
"It is what is best not just for the two of you, but for both families." Lola replied her son.
"We can't get married. We. Are. Not. Getting. Married." Steve pronounced every word forcefully for effect.
"We are best friends for God's sake! I can't even believe you both would suggest such a thing. That is absolutely ridiculous!" Joan exclaimed. She was just as angry as Steve was now.
"Who would you rather get married to? Your enemy?" Bisi asked in a tone that said she felt they were both being ridiculous.
"You know what is actually ridiculous? You both standing here after having woken up NAKED in each other's arms, and pretending like you don't feel anything for each other, when we all know the truth." Lola added incredulously.
