Chapter 2 - Hitting the ground

When Matthew opened his eyes he could see the clear sky ahead. The sun was going down. He felt warm and a strange sensation of wetness as though he was on water. He looked around, he was definitely on Land. He could tell that he was lying on grass. Suddenly, he began to feel cool then cold and wet. "Why do I feel wet? if only I could move out of the water" he thought. He made an effort to adjust his weight and then the pain hit him. It was as though someone plunged a knife into his right thigh and then pulled it both upwards and downwards simultaneously. He screamed as the pain kept shooting up towards his back and he began shivering uncontrollably. He clamped his jaw tight in an attempt to stifle the pain and he could feel a throbbing in his head and legs as though he could feel his heart beat through his skin. He shook his head in an attempt to clear his thoughts and try to recollect where he was and for goodness sake why he was there. Wrong move! The movement sent shock like waves rolling through his body and stabbing pain now in both limbs. His vision blurred and he felt himself slipping into unconsciousness. He resisted it, held himself completely still as he tried to remain conscious. He had to figure out what happened. He had to try to get help. As he desperately searched his brain for any possible recollection of why he was on a field looking up at the setting sun and in such indescribable pain, a face appeared over his. The face was directly in the path of the sun so he couldn't make out the features but he knew it was a familiar face. The thought crossed his mind that he may be dreaming or hallucinating but then she spoke. "Matthew are you okay?" she asked peering into his face. She touched the edge of his nose and lifted up a bloody finger which she cleaned on her Jacket. He tried to find his voice as pain kept shooting through his body. "I think so" he said "What happened?" he asked and immediately he did, the memories flooded back. He remembered saying goodbye to his wife and 6 month old son, the stiff hug she gave him, the child wailing for him as he entered the vehicle, the short drive along the express the loud bang as they were hit by the side and the endless rolling and spinning as the vehicle sumersaulted. He knew he had lost consciousness but he heard in his mind the sound of crunching metal as the vehicle hit the ground. Probably he imagined, it he wasn't sure.

"An accident" the young lady said. it was obvious she was in shock. Her lips quivered and she was sweating profusely despite the fact that the sun had set and the air was chilly. She averted her eyes so she wasn't looking into his face. Her name came to his mind. "Jane" he called her in a soft voice. "Yes?" she responded still keeping her eyes wandering around, away from his face, away from his body. her eyes kept darting around as though she was in a large maze plotting out the best route to freedom. He recollected that he was traveling with her. Jane was his wife's younger sister and he was taking her to school to resume her first year in University. This was the major purpose for the trip though he also had some business to attend to in the area. "Are you hurt?" he asked, afraid of the answer. "No" she replied though he could see that from the way she was leaning to one side, she was in pain. "What's wrong with my legs?" he asked. He was afraid to move any part of his body especially his head. While the pain in his head threatened to cause him to lose consciousness, the pain in his legs were ten times worse. He could feel it throbbing and pulsing. She cast a glance to his legs, paused and looked up at him. This time, she held his gaze. He could see tears glistening in her eyes. She got up stiffly without giving him a response and ran off. He could hear her screaming to some people.

"My brother-in-law needs help please!" She kept repeating it in a high pitched voice and after a dozen or so times, she was sobbing, wailing, and screaming. He felt tears in his own eyes. He looked up. The sky was dark now, the sun had set, resting behind the tall trees. He suddenly had a deep desire to be home, on his bed. He couldn't hold the tears any longer. He didn't sob, the movement would surely have knocked him unconscious. He just let the tears flow. "Is this the end?" he thought. " Well I have lived a good life, I have been faithful to God. If this is it there isn't much I can do about it. Oh the pain is so terrible. I probably should give up." He closed his eyes. Embracing the peace that was overwhelming him. He felt as though life was draining out of him and he could feel darkness closing in. Suddenly, he saw the face of his son. Chubby, smiling, with just two teeth and he didn't want to die. His eyes shot open. Jane was standing above him now and he could see the feet of others beside her. "Jane" he whispered. He suddenly felt weaker now. "Tell my wife I love her, take care of her and take care of my son, please". Jane turned her head away. He knew she was crying. "Oh my wife, my lovely dear wife. is this the end? wouldn't I see you again? Oh God! you know I am ready to die but please I do not want to leave behind my wife and son. I do not want to die" Someone placed a hand behind his head, another at his hips. he knew they wanted to move him. he gritted his teeth expecting the intensified pain. He didn't want to lose consciousness again, while the pain was horrible, he was afraid that if he closed his eyes, he may never open it again. As they lifted him, he felt bones moving in his thigh and the pain gripped every part of his body. He felt as though every bone in his body was breaking and suddenly everywhere went dark.
