Chapter 14 - Magnemite Practice

When Booth is finished eating lunch, he makes his way to the Tiered Trainer Center. Today he wanted to test out his Magnemite.

Booth arrives at the Tiered Trainer Center around one o'clock. In the lobby, he sees Emmet and decides to greet him. Emmet sees him as well and walks over.

"Hey Booth, did you want to do that battle now?"

Booth thinks for a second and remembers Emmet's offer from the week before. "My bad, I must have forgotten about it. Either way, I can't do it right now. I just had a battle earlier and I was going to let my Pansear rest a bit."

"That's fine. If you need any help, I would be happy to teach you. I am pretty free today."

Emmet is one of the most experienced Tier 1 trainers in the area. His skills are already very close to becoming Tier 2. Getting help from him would be a great help to anyone. Booth doesn't turn him down.

"Alright! I had a couple things I was wondering about."

The two head to a training room as they talk. Booth begins by explaining his problem.

"I recently caught a Magnemite and there's still a lot of stuff I'm unfamiliar with."

"You got a Magnemite! That's so cool. How does it eat?" Emmet asks his own question in excitement.

Booth laughs and answers. "I wondered that myself. I thought it would feed on electricity or something, but that's not the case."

"Oh really, what does it eat?"

"It eats any normal kind of food. It just kind of zaps it then absorbs it."

Emmet seems amused, "For real! I'll have to see it some time. In any case, I'm guessing you want to work with Magnemite, right."

"That's right. I figured since you would have experience with multiple different pokemon, It would be good to get your advice." Booth responds.

"Sure, let's get started then." Emmet says as they enter a training room.

First they work on getting a sample from the Magnemite for the Integrator. Booth lets out his Magnemite first. He scrapes a bit of metal from the Magnemite for the Integrator sample.

Booth gets Magnemite's sample ready on one side of the Integrator. He puts his own sample on the opposite side and waits for the results. A few seconds pass and both of the samples show up good. Meanwhile Emmet is giving Booth a look telling him to hurry up.

'Here I go.' Booth thinks as he flips the switch on the Integrator.

With the activation of the Integrator Booth is suddenly immersed with Magnemite's senses. Booth instantly gets an idea of Magnemite's body. He commands his Magnemite to move around so he can figure out the rest of its senses.

Five minutes later, Booth collects his initial thoughts. He then shares them with Emmet, who is waiting patiently to hear his experience.

"It's a really good feeling to be moving around. It's kind of like roller skating for the first time. It's awkward and you feel scared of falling, but it's still exciting once you figure it out."

"Cool. I've never been roller skating, but I think I get it." Emmet says. "How do you float? Do you need any power to stay airborne?"

"It's unclear. Magnemite isn't releasing power anywhere that I can tell." Booth folds his arms as he concentrates to feel any power being released while his Magnemite moves.

Emmet thinks of something and explains it to Booth, "It might not need to expend any power to stay afloat. I'm not sure about quick movements, but it may stay floating by just circulating or creating power."

Booth nods and tests Emmet's theory by having Magnemite zip around. Booth finds that Emmet wasn't far off. He could feel a bit of power being used when Magnemite goes higher or faster. And when it comes to moving normally Magnemite stops consuming power altogether.

'The power consumption for moving around quickly isn't bad. At the very least it takes less power than it does to strengthen other pokemon. It's not something I can use continuously, but it should get me out of a pinch when I need it..'

For the next hour Booth and Emmet exchange different ideas and test each of Magnemite's moves. The moves Thundershock, Thunder Wave, and Supersonic aren't anything out of the ordinary.

Electro Ball and Gyro Ball, on the other hand, have quite different functions than they did in the games. The results of the new moves surprise Booth.

'Electro Ball and Gyro Ball's damage used to be based on the speed stat in the games. Now, Electro Ball is more of a charge move. I thought this would be disappointing, but I'm happy to be wrong. Unlike normal charge moves with a damage cap early on, Electro Ball gets stronger as you charge it. The only downside is it takes a long time to charge.

Gyro Ball also works differently. For better or for worse, the move is a lot more simpler than it is in the games. Now, the faster you spin the more damage you do. The odd thing is how Magnemite uses the move.'

Booth has Magnemite use Gyro Ball again and pays close attention to the move. Magnemite begins by spinning vertically with its magnets spinning as well to gain power. When it builds enough power it tucks its body in and takes off. Magnemite hits the ground at an impressive speed.

Booth commands it to make a sharp turn next to test its mobility. To Booth's pleasure it achieves great results. The Magnemite bounces off the ground and changes its direction as much as it can to the right.

"Sizzz!"

Magnemite strikes the ground again and makes an astonishing right turn. It still shuffles a bit forward, but after half a second the Magnemite is going in a completely new direction. After learning what he wanted to know, Booth calls his Magnemite back. Magnemite hears and returns to Booth.

Emmet cheers in appreciation of the move, "Woah, that turn was wild. It managed to turn so far right, a little more and it would have been going backwards."

"I'm shocked as well. I thought Magnemite wouldn't have good mobility, but this is pretty great."

"Alright! All that's left to test are Spark and Magnet Bomb. Let's see it."

Booth waits a minute for Magnemite to rest and then tries Spark. Magnemite zips at the wall and crashes into it with an electric tackle. Booth nods and remembers the result.

The last move is Magnet Bomb. As soon as Magnemite is ready, Booth has it use the move. Four gray orbs are quickly created and shot by Magnemite. Although no specific target was given, Magnemite lines them up perfectly along a mark on the wall. After about three seconds the orbs explode.

Booth praises his Magnemite and lets it rest, "That was a great finish for the last move. I'm sure I can find out how the moves work in detail at a later time. For now, what are your thoughts on Magnemite?"

Booth gives Emmet a second to think. After Emmet puts his thoughts together, he responds, "I think you will get the best use out of it in the medium to long range. The medium range is better in my opinion though. When it comes to long range pokemon the most important thing is to have moves with high power. You can make up for it in other ways, but most often opponents can adapt or just charge through.

Magnemite is a little slower than other pokemon, but it's fast moves make up for it. Besides making your hits more accurate, fighting at a mid-range will help you conserve power. Instead of wasting power trying to trap the opponents, you can bait them yourself. It sounds riskier, but it's way easier than trying to outplay your opponents from afar in my opinion."

"Wow, that was an excellent analysis. I'll definitely keep it in mind." Booth is amazed at Emmet's ability to give a simple and reasonable analysis after just a few hours of seeing a new pokemon.

"You've been a great help, Emmet. Thank you." Booth says.

"Sure thing. I got a lot out of it as well." Emmet sees that everything is done and picks up his stuff to leave, "Well I'm going, say hi if you see me next time." Emmet replies.

"Alright, see you Emmet." Booth waves to Emmet who heads out first.

There are still a couple things Booth wants to test with magnemite, so he gets to work. He spends an entire hour finding different ways he can move and attack with Magnemite. In this time, he takes a lot of inspiration from Tyler and his Sandshrew. By the end of the hour he is able to improve his compatibility with Magnemite significantly.

Booth looks at the time and decides to spend the rest of his time working with Pansear. What he learned with Magnemite gave him many ideas that he thought could work for Pansear.

Booth works until evening with Pansear. When he feels satisfied with his progress he stops for the day.

Booth returns his Pansear to its pokeball and grabs his stuff. With his training done for today there is only one more day to practice until the team competition.
