Chereads / GateKeeper / Chapter 9 - Why Do Titles Even Matter?

Chapter 9 - Why Do Titles Even Matter?

Thank god that irritating headache is over, time to relax at home. I walk out of the gate to be in the same location as I entered. It seems my clone is at home doing homework, why haven't I thought to do that before? Clones doing homework is every child's dream. I can be an idiot and forget things, I am terribly sorry. Since nobody was home and my blinds were closed I can teleport near my clone. Since my clone has the same energy signal as I do, teleporting to him is extremely easy. I teleported over fifteen miles in an instant, entering my three bedroom apartment. I live in a spacious and fancy building. I live with an overprotected woman. She can be very annoying at times.

"Griffin, you need to stop breaking your arms?" I will break my arms as much as I want to. They are my arms.

"Griffin, you need to eat more?"

"Griffin, please stop getting into fights with the little children across the street?" I hate those children, alway looking and making funny faces at me.

"Griffin, stop using your abilities to pants people that walk past the building because they have funny mustaches." They have stupid mustaches, so it's punishment for me seeing their nonsensical faces.

She says annoying crap like that all the time, she thinks she can boss me around. She follows me around everywhere I go. Taking care of every little need I may or may not need. She would be the perfect mother to a snotty nose kid. I don't need or want another mother. My mother passed away a long time ago, but that is a story for another time. It's too early in the story to have a flashback arc. I only have her around because I need a fake mom. Since technically I am a fourteen year old boy, I can't live on my own. She makes me lunch every morning, but I never take it.

"Hey Griffin! How was the dungeon?" The woman was cleaning the dishes after making dinner. She wore a pink apron with her dark brown hair in a bun. She loved wearing matching pink cat slippers while cooking. She was a talented cook, she can prepare full course meals with food from many different dimensions and origins.

"It was boring, uneventful, and a waste of my time. How was your equally boring day?" Griffin remembering the embarrassment of the dungeon.

"Come on, tell me what happened? I am interested? My day was fun, I performed three surgeries today. They all went successful, they will all live to see another day." She obviously loved her work. Elizabeth always puts others before herself. Coming to this new world with Griffin and being able to save lives brings Elizabeth a lot of warmth.

Her name was Elizabeth, last name unknown. She is an extremely skilled heart doctor, who can also do other surgeries if necessary. The main reason why Griffin lets her stay is because she pays all of the bills. The reason why they are profitable enough to live so lavishly is due to Elizabeth.

"Nothing special. A game show surrounded by ugly skeletons with a flying duck as the games host. Also ghosts and a T-rex with snake hair as a boss. See boring like I said," Griffin sitting down on the couch, his feet kicked up on the coffee table. Remote in hand, scrolling through random television channels.

"Wow, a tyrannosaurus rex with snake hair. Must have been pretty scary." She said with a piece of pasta in her mouth.

"Hey, why do humans enjoy seeing other people get injured? It's pretty sad huh?" Griffin was watching a show where a group of people sit there and watch videos of people falling or getting hit by something.

"Yea, I guess in a way people are constantly hurting and being able to see someone else get hurt brings them a sense of comfort. It makes them happy so they laugh. Or they like seeing other people make terrible decisions, getting hurt in the process," said Elizabeth

"Whatever you said makes no sense. I don't know why but it's freaking hilarious. Haha. This idiot tried to jump down a flight of stairs, his face completely planted on the ground. What a screw up. That dental bill is going to hit just as hard as the cement floor, where his teeth now rest in pieces," said Griffin laughing belligerently.

"It's not that funny Griffin, also you do dumb things all the time."

"Yea okay, whatever you say. I wouldn't face plant on a simple fifteen stair jump. I would just float down the stairs or better yet simply walk," Griffin enjoying his own joke.

"You can be so childish at times. Remember that one time in front of a whole planet, you mocked their dance ritual and basically disrespected their god. You completely humiliated yourself and myself. We are banned for life now," said Elizabeth, putting four even portions of pasta on plates. A nice aroma filled the room.

"You know they offer their food to their so-called "god." I was doing their god a favor, have you tried their food? Now that's disrespectful."

"Whatever can you just help me set the table, we are having guests over shortly," replied Elizabeth while she was taking off her apron. Rushing over to the dinner table with two plates in both hands. The remaining plates hover right behind her. Griffin moving the plates, while still watching tv.

"Finally, I am starving." Griffin turns the tv off and gets up from the couch. He walks over to the dinner table and sits in his usual chair at the head of the table. He notices the extra plates.

"What are the extra plates for? I know you love to eat, but three plates full is a bit excessive don't you think? That's like too much carbs ya know?"

" Would you shut up? I do not eat that much" She was getting red with embarrassment" I literally just told you. We are having guests over where you are not paying attention?"

"Sorry, but no I was barely listening to you."

"Well, I will get my revenge shortly."

"Huh? Oh no, how could this day possibly get worse." Griffin at a realization of who his guests were. The air around them grew thin. Orion and someone else were now standing in the living room.

"Thank you for preparing a tasty dinner for my friend and I," said Orion. He took off his black fedora hat revealing his thin gray hair.

"Oh no problem, I know how much you love my cooking," replied Elizabeth. She sat down on the chair at Griffin's left side.

"Well thank you for having us, Griffin I am pleased to hear you dealt with the dungeon rather quickly this time," said Orion

"Yea whatever dude, let's just eat." Griffin grabbing his fork, digging it deep into his pasta. Putting a huge amount of food in his mouth. "So why are you guys here?"

"I am assigning another gatekeeper to this Earth. For now, this man right here is your partner."

Griffin spits his food out. Pieces of ravioli and cheese fly onto the guest's plates and clothing.

"What! I don't need or want a partner. I am perfectly strong enough to handle my own planet by myself," said Griffin slamming his arms down on the table.

"Griffin! Fix this right now." Elizabeth yelled at Griffin for acting like a baby throwing a tantrum. Griffin looked at her with irritated eyes. He closed his eyes, calming down. With a wave of his hand, time reverted to how it was before he spit his food out of his mouth.

"I'm sorry Elizabeth," Griffin apologizes.

"You can go ahead and introduce yourself," Orion gestured to the unknown man to reveal himself.

"My name is Sebastian Cole, I love to paint. I am excited to be able to work with the infamous Griffin Yeager. I have heard all the stories. The good, the great, and even the tragic." Sebastian dressed like a painter on the sidewalk marking up the side of the wall in Paris. Long hair into a ponytail, a brush held up behind his ear. A button up shirt with no under shit exposing his skin. He even spoke in a french accent. (Who is this clown? Why is he so obsessed with me?)

"Griffin, he is going to be living with us now," said Elizabeth. She calmly continues to eat her meal. The apartment did have three bedrooms just in case someone did need to stay for a while. Still Griffin did not like this guy.

"So Orion, why do I need a partner?" Griffin was skeptical of the reasoning behind having a new partner. It was more like a new set of eyes. He wasn't up to anything, or planning anything. The higher ups must still have their doubts on him. Griffin couldn't blame them, bad things usually happen to him, more importantly to the people involved with him.

"Lately, we have noticed an increased amount of gates and dimensional cuts on this planet. So we are just adding extra help to you that is all. Seraphin herself wanted me to tell you that you have been doing a marvelous job, but due to your abilities you should be handling gates a lot faster," explained Orion.

"The Council doesn't think I am the reason for the amplified attention we have been getting?" Griffin chose his words carefully to not set off any red flags. "You guys have eighty-five percent of my powers locked away. I don't have enough stamina or power to open gates or cut dimensional barriers."

"We just want to be cautious, to make sure what happened last time. Never happens again," The words coming out of Orion's mouth were oozing with suffering and hatred. He was releasing a serious amount of energy. If a normal person was in the room, they would have been knocked out by the intense pressure.

"Okay, but like I said before. That wasn't my fau-" Orion moving at near instant speed, blitzing to Griffin. A sword has been drawn, the blade pressing on Griffin's neck. Griffin's hands up in resignation, but he was calm. Not fazed at all by his attack. The plates and utensils would have been flying in the air, but Griffin held it all into place.

"Watch your next words very carefully young man," said Orion in a calm but demanding voice.

"Sure. The reason I have been sent to this world is because this dimension has the weakest amount of spatial energy. So I can't boost my own power with it, right? So there is nothing to fear. I have been a good doggie. I can even sit and roll over," Griffin replied, hands still in the air. He said the words in such a monotone way, almost like it had been rehearsed by a depressed teenager.

"Boys the dinner table is to eat and tell stories to laugh too. Fighting will not be tolerated," said Elizabeth while she was stuffing another mouthful of pasta. Bringing her hand to her cheeks, delighted with the taste. Proud of her own creation, she was a big eater. Orion removed the blade from his neck, a single thread of blood flowed. Griffin returns to his meal.

"What a second," Sebastian looks around the room, glaring at each face at the table. He appeared to be confused. "Who are you people? Why am I here?"

"Oh great, another freak show I have to deal with," replied Griffin.
