Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Meeting New Species

'Day 3 of my new life, turns out to be kind of bad.'

After we all experienced the same growth in our bodies, we went out hunting again. We wandered around without a care for direction, led by some goblins.

On the way, I waved my stick around and told the goblins,

"This, good!".

Then I proceeded to smack lightly at them. A few started to look around to pick up sticks and branches after seeing my actions. That gained the attention of the rest of the group until we were all equipped with wooden weapons, boosting our prowess even further. At least, that's what I thought.

After some time, we still hadn't encountered any creatures yet. So, I relaxed a bit and focused more on the scenery. Vines hang down from up above. Rays of sunlight came down, providing nutrients and light for the forest. Bushes could be seen every now and then. And if focus enough, a variety of berries, fruits, and mushrooms could be found. Sounds of birds chirping from far away, insects buzzing, croaking frogs, and leaves rustling were heard. If I was human, lost in this forest from the start, I wouldn't even think that this was a different world.

Leaving my thoughts aside, I went up to a bush near me to pick up a berry. A red, mixed with some blue, berry. I brought it close and smelled it.

'No smell at all.'

I remembered in the past, in some fantasy stories, that goblins are omnivorous creatures, and have the ability to eat almost everything. I couldn't know if I'm able to eat it or not, so I temporarily kept it in my hand.

'Now that I think about it, I'm not wearing anything.'

"..."

'No in a way, this makes more sense! What kind of monster wears clothes just over their groins anyway?'

'I guess the authors just draw them with clothes just to protect the audiences.'

'Still, I need to get some kind of bag to store things.'

After walking around some more, we started to hear noises coming from the left side. Thinking that it came from preys, the goblins carelessly went towards it, myself included.

As we came closer and closer to the sound, we started to run faster as well. And when we could see the origin of the noises, I was slightly shocked.

'Are they...kobolds?'

Kobold. A creature with a small stature. Like to live in a group. Its most distinguishing feature is its dog-like head. Thanks to that, it has a highly acute sense of smell and hearing.

While we were about to start running in, suddenly, one goblin at the very front was taken down. Two kobolds jumped out from both sides and gnawed him away.

'Seems like they have known about us in advance!', I quickly thought.

We all rushed in, in an attempt to save it. Upon reaching close, those two kobolds immediately backed away and growled at us. The goblin? It was dead. Its blood was still on those dogs' mouths.

Enraged, once again, we rushed in. They called the remaining ones to join in the fight. Using their claws and jaws, a huge amount of damage was inflicted on us. Thanks to having the sticks, we were able to fight back. The fight could be described in one word.

Chaos. Blood spilled and bodies fell. The remaining continued fighting until they fell down, or manage to become survivors.

After a long time, the kobolds unexpectedly decided to retreat. They backed away and ran on all four, leaving the injured behind. We couldn't care less, so we ganged in the remaining ones that were unable to run and the fight quickly ended in our victory.

"Rawrrr!"

"Warwrrr!"

Even though most of them ran away, it was still a victory for us. All the goblins expressed sounds and cries of joy after winning, except for me. I had a mixed feeling of relief, frustration, and curiosity.

'Why did they retreat?'

They were clearly winning, and I was having thought about running away to save my life. Thinking about all the possibilities that made the kobold retreat, I went back along with the goblins.

Summary of the day, we met a group of kobolds and managed to win after a loss of 7 goblins. We managed to obtain 4 kobolds' bodies because the rest ran away. Nevertheless, kobold bodies are bigger than that of rabbits, and with fewer mouths now, that means enough food for the day as well.

"Cowards!"

"Runaway dogs!"

"Right, fear us!"

I guessed the goblins were saying similar things along the lines. But as they haven't learned much about languages, they were just waving their hands around and making weird noises.
