Chapter 26 - Evil Genius and The Trial of Wisdom

As the Elders were observing my mother and me, two servants brought a target dummy and Muninn from my study.

The trial of wisdom is not like any other trial in tribes. It is the only one where the trial examiner has a risk of death. A druid must have some basic understanding of all the schools, including alchemy to pass it.

Should the student fail, the examiner could be placed in serious harm. It's done this way to make examiners really serious about who they teach the druid arts to.

In this case, my mother is taking in that risk today. Im slightly sweating from it. The potential for loss here is immense. She must trust me enough to take on this trial.

She first pointed to the dummy that has just been placed about 30 ft from me (About 9.1 meters). She said, "demonstrate your ingenuity by use your strongest self made spell to destroy that dummy."

This wasn't in the job description of this trail!

Im supposed demonstrate two rank spells of my same rank, not a self made spell.

[She is testing you seriously]

Sure enough I look to my mother and can see a slight smirk on her face.

Im not surprised she knows of my accomplishments already with her clairvoyance and all.

I sigh and then turn on my soul spear ability to use lightning bolt. Lifting my hands out in front of me, a hint of sparks generate from my eyes.

First I completed my connection to nature and asked it to turn my hand into opposite magnetic poles. It slowly did this by magnetizing it with a mana link.

Then I strengthened the magnetic energy by asking for more mana to be poured in. I also slowly fine tuned the magnetic fields between my hands.

Magnetic fields and electricity are linked. If I produce and electric current, a small circular magnetic field appears around it.

The reverse is true as well.

If I make an magnetic field in a circle, a small electric current will form in it. All I due is feed the fuel to strengthen it.

So then came the lightning energy. I asked for the mana around me to turn into electrical charge in the form of electrons by tapping into my lighting affinity.

This part was simple because mana can act like any particle so I just asked it to turn into electrons. These free electrons were attracted to my growing electric railgun and slowly filtered through my hands.

A numbing sensation formed in my hand.

At this point everyone in the room was shocked to see this. Pulses of electricity entering my hands into the takomak shaped circle of energy between my fingers. The only thing keeping it from discharging is the magnetic fields.

My fathers jaw was practical on the floor and the elders eyes were peeled onto my hands. As far as I know there are very few druids amongst the elders. Those that are havent really explored it but only used it for minor medicine.

What I'm doing now is tantamount to break their minds on the abilities of druids.

She did say my strongest spell.

[Show off, you just wanna debut the spell]

So what if I do. You said it yourself, no matter what I do at this point, people will want to kill me. I might as well go all out.

[At least hold back a little]

Hmph

I slowly listened to her and prepared to launch the bolt early. I calculated the distance and prepared to alter my controlled magnetic fields in a way that forces the lighting to travel through the dummy.

Then I told nature to do its thing. Slowly the circle of electricity wobbled into an oval and then the next thing you know, boom.

The lighting hit the dummy cracking it into pieces.

My mother appeared behind me and tapped my shoulder.

"You are an amazing child you know that?", she said.

"More like Evil Genius. How did he come up with that", said my father appearing directly in front of me.

" I just played with electricity and I figured it out. You guys told me I'd have to come up with my own lighting spells", I said clearly playing dumb.

My mother ruffled my hair and said, "regardless, you've passed this portion of the trial with flying colors."

My mother then cleanly unwrapped a knife from her side and knocked herself with it with no hesitation. She then placed it on the ground in front of her.

[Wow she's pretty abrupt]

Or she trusts me too much.

"You have about 20 minutes to cure what poison is flowing through my veins before it damages me permanently," she said in a strict tone.

[Holy Sh**]

I'm sweating now.

I could see my regretful father walk away slowly. He has no part in this.

Im also so confused. Why are these trials so brutal. I can understand valor because of the personality traits it comes along with but is this really necessary.

Is there such a stringent need for screening people. All these people here have done incredible things in their lives and done a lot to help people. Why are there these rules and processes in place that can traumatize people from doing things like them.

[I think your barking up the wrong tree here]

How so?

[Well think about the reason they put the rules in place. Don't think about it now, think about it after you've saved your mom]

Snapping out of it and noticing it's already been 20 seconds I rushed to the knife.

I smelled it and then used Life sense on it to discover it was a bacterial poison.

The bacteria would kill you through infection.

How did my mother know I'd be able to cure this. Most expert druids would have to cut of her arm or cripple her arms Life force before cutting the bacteria out and reforming the arm.

"Don't worry mom I got just the thing". I slowly took out my bag and found a bottle labeled Gentamicin antibiotic.

Please don't be allergic. I got out a syringe I had cleanly wrapped and sanitized it with some sanitizing agent I created using alcohol. I drew the antibiotic and then looked toward my mother.

The Antibiotic Im treating her with came 10 years after the first discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic. I recently was able to synthesize a two different medications from a few specimens I had the palace collect. This one came from a fungal bacteria and is used for extreme cases of infection.

"Hold still mom this may hurt", I said while asking for her hand she pricked herself.

I looked at a vein in her forearm and injected her slowly. She winced but was okay.

"Take one of these pills everyday for the next 7 days. This treatment I used may hurt one of your kidneys but we can remedy that later using magic". Is said while putting a make shift bandaid on her.

She opened her eyes and I sensed her using life sense on her arm to see a part of her life force killing the other half that was spreading through her body.

My mothers eyes lit up as she said, "Incredible! You solved a problem most druids struggled with their entire lives to treat".

"Brother Bjorn, I think you were right about evil genius. First he develops a calculating fighting style. Next he creates devastating new magic, and now he's created a revolutionary new medicine. We need to seriously reconsider the security we surround this boy with," Said Heimdall with glowing eyes.

He said it in a low tone but I can hear him. In fact, everyone in the room could as well, causing everyone to go silent like a pin drop lost in their thoughts.

"You've demonstrated wisdom with this exam by finding a new treatment to use against poisons", my mother said with her trademark motherly smile.

"The last exam was to test your connection to nature in preparation for a contracted beast, but seeing as the bird has been your eyes and ears the entire time he's been here it shouldn't be necessary."

So she can tell I was reading all the elders thoughts. I can also see some elders look at me with a smirk. Looks like whatever info they feed him was false.

"I now pronounce you to be as wise as our forefathers, and to have passed the Trial of wisdom. All those here will bear witness to this child's mind. You are now an official druid of the tribes", Said my mother in glee.
