Lanse stopped listening to the escorts after learning a Syb-victim could run for elder. That craziness convinced him there would be no cure to the Syber-virus that day and wanted to hear no more. But the silence apart from the escorts he followed made their words continue to hit his eardrums.
Like all hosts of the virus, the Balance Seal restrained Madara-J'nah's mutation. Amidst meditations to strengthen the Seal, he performed trials on himself to find a cure. One such trial created an exception where the mutation was triggered despite the Seal. But that was not the only anomaly from the incident.
The virus was awakened but it did not take full control of the brain to kill its host. Since the balance of life was intact, the Seal did not meet its criteria to instill death. Hence Madara-J'nah was alive, and so was the virus.
