Tess stood an inch from Lanse's face fuming at him, but he kept his eyes on her shoulder. Even with her that close, he was not going to give a scum his full attention. That thought flew from his mind when darkness filled the top section of her face, and he darted his eyes there. Seeing her pale eyes stabbed his heart and her voice began to hit dead ears.
What just happened? He blinked twice before his vision blurred her angry face out of sight. The disturbance got memories he threw in the back of his mind to rush to the surface.
It was after he had seen tentacles rip from her back. He had opened her eyes only to get frightened when they were filled-black. But it couldn't have happened, and what he thought he saw a second ago couldn't have either.
