Tess's teammates couldn't take their eyes off the knives stabbed into the ground at the entrance of the kitchen. It was missing something. Where was the critter that should have been oozing blood and trapped underneath? When the words Tess spoke hit their ears, they agreed. The critter had faded through the ground to miss their knives.
Zack dropped to his knees with his forehead touching the ground. A low moan came from his head with his face hidden under darkness.
Szedra turned around to face the kitchen and began making ticking noises with her mouth. Her furball didn't come racing into her hands and she furrowed with a heavy heart. Her mind couldn't recognize the low moans from Zack. She couldn't care less about what was happening with him.
Zino glimpsed Zack and then back at the cooking knives with half their blades jammed into the floor. She couldn't decide which sight was more worrisome. Her heart wrenched inside her chest.
