Chapter 4 - Wrapped & Delivered

"Let's go for a walk!?" Although it was asked, the mayor's tone indicated that Jamie didn't have much choice but to comply. So he waved to Shaun to tell him he was off and joined the mayor on a walk outside.

Mayor- "I'll make it short and sweet, Sinclair. Two weeks you got to consider my offer. 50k is a good deal for that stretch of land. I even gave you the courtesy of not throwing your delinquent brother in jail."

Jamie- "I am a simple man Mr Reiss. Things such as money are of no value to me. So, as I stated before. My property is not for sale".

(Hehe!) Mayor - "Do you know why I like being this town's Mayor, kid?"

Jamie- "Do tell".

Mayor – "It's small, some may say an ambitious man would never cherish this hell hole, but they are wrong. You see before discovering the supergene and the uprising of the Church of Divinity. Men sought to distance themselves from God, but the irony was everything we sought to accomplish was a means to be Gods ourselves".

Jamie –"Quite the tale, and why are you giving me this lesson as to the psyche of men?"

Mayor – "It's simple, kid. In this town, I have accomplished the ultimate dream of men; I am God! A pest steals my son's car; with the snap of a finger, he is incarcerated and his future forever ruined. When his vermin brother refuses to give way to my dreams, with another snap, he and his brother go missing, and nobody cares."

Jamie- "Well, that's a bit daunting, don't you think? Sadly, my answer is still no. It's funny you would mention God. You might want to brush up on your Greek mythology as well; there is a fascinating tale. As I recall, one day, the mortals decided they had enough of the Gods…. Well, I won't ruin it for you. Good day, Mr Reiss."

With his last utterance, Jamie walked away, leaving the Mayor to seethe in anger. He was agitated, crushing the clipboard with the force of his arms. Watching him walk away, the mayor whispered under his breath, "So you have made your choice, and tonight I'll be making mine."

A beautiful moon hung above the twenty acres of Sinclair farm. The light glowed within the tiny house as laughter could be heard inside a party of three dined.

"You lie; he did not eat that whole two gallons of ice cream in one night!" Uttered Lucy, who could barely contain her laughter when looking at Shaun, who was less than enthralled by his brother's tale.

"As God is my witness. Let's just say his bathroom was out of commission for quite a while," Jamie chuckled as he could barely contain the wine that was in his mouth. Lucy couldn't hold her laughter, especially seeing Shaun's embarrassed expression. Haha! – "Jamie.., stop, you're going to let me- pee myself."

But Shaun being the immature one, retaliated by mocking.., "Oh Jamie, stop.., I'm so in love with you and must laugh at your corny jokes. Why don't you two just get a room?!"

"Ooh, the little cutie can't take a bit of teasing," Lucy pinched his cheeks, further infuriating Shaun, who quickly excused himself from the table to wash the dishes. Doing chores was far better than being around those two. With Shaun making himself scarce, it was then that Jamie pounced, whisking Lucy into his arms.

"Jam..!" She stuttered with a flushed face indicating with her head that Shaun was merely in the kitchen and could return at any time. "He did say get a room," Jamie mischievously winked, which caused Lucy's face to become boiling. "Ok.., ok, you bad boy. Let me go and freshen up first. I bought something I think you will like on and then off my body. Hint, hint, its lace," She seductively bit her lips while rubbing her hand across his chest.

An hour had passed, and Lucy's head was resting on Jamie's bare chest. She rubbed his abs wishing this could last forever. "I want to marry you, Mr Sinclair," She stated. "Why would a future district attorney ruin her life by marrying a mere farmer?" He innocently questioned.

"You could be a street sweeper, busboy, or even a starving artist for all I care. I just want you, Jam; that's all I need to be happy. And don't ever use merely when describing yourself. I'll rent somewhere off campus where you could come to visit and stay with me from time to time."

Jamie - Cough! Cough! – "I don't know, with you gone, I might be able to have some fun for a change; I would be an eligible bachelor after all…."

Lucy punched his side – "You're a funny guy!" She became visibly upset by his words. "You know I, kid," Jamie responded.

Lucy – "Behind every joke, there is a hint of truth."

Jamie – "Not in this case, of course, I'll visit. I know it seems I'm trying not to commit, but things are a bit more complicated than you think. I simply don't want you to have regrets in the future."

Thinking he was once more referring to his lowly status, Lucy once more nestled against his chest, "My future is good once you are in it." Her words caused Jamie to smile; he played in her hair as she fell asleep.

A few hours had passed, and Jamie's eyes opened. There was pitch darkness, and Lucy was still fast asleep on his chest. He gently placed her head on a pillow before getting up to enter the passage. A few doors down was Shaun's room; he checked to see the little fellow was fast asleep.

Spek chirped, flying to his shoulders, "It's a full moon, huh? Let's go and take in its splendour, buddy," He rubbed the tiny hummingbird's head before exiting the house. Just as Jamie described, there was a beautiful moon that hung above the town of Frankfield. The two started walking on the deserted night road. Soon bright beaming lights could be seen in the distance, coming fast towards Jamie. Three trucks were swerving on the street; the source of the bright lights was apparent.

"Boys look who saved us the trouble," A familiar voice uttered. It was Sheriff Veron, two of his deputies, Burt, and five others that Jamie knew far too well. "The Sinclairs they come wrapped and delivered. I guess the postal office should take a few notes, huh, Boys?" The nine men laughed as they drank. Looking at the lot, the sheriff had a shotgun, his deputies carried pistols, and the others varied from baseball bats to chains.
