"Bye, see ya later," Gwen said with the wave of her fingers. She came up to me and hugged me, only to say, "Remember, Amabel, you can work from home. Off you go." Are you fucking kidding me?
Trevor and I walked to the elevator and waited in silence to get to the bottom floor. I didn't allow myself to look at this beautiful man next to me. Why didn't I kiss him this morning, when he was practically begging me to kiss him. What the hell is wrong with me?
We got to the main lobby and then I saw Jonathan. "Good morning, Miss Avery. Mr. Walker," he said and opened the car door. We got in and Jonathan started driving. I couldn't look at him for too long. Each time he caught me looking at him, I shy away from his gaze.
As we drove, I realized we were no longer on the busy side of Los Angeles, but in a very far and rich community on the upper side of LA. Woah, he must be really rich.
We arrived at his parents' house, I mean castle, around the water fountain in the center in front of the house to meet at the front door. Jonathan got out and opened the door. Trevor slid out and held his hand for me to get out. Like the idiot I am, I got out the other side of the door.
"Amabel," Mr. Walker said and greeted me with a gentle shake of my hand. "Good morning, Mr. Walker."
"Amabel, I would like you to meet my wife, Katherine. Honey, this is Amabel." Mrs. Walker is probably the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, after my mom. That reminds me... I have to visit her today.
"It's so good to finally meet you, Amabel. I've heard a lot about you." All good I hope...
"Thank you, Mrs. Walker. It's good to meet you too."
"Oh, please dear, call me Katherine."
This whole situation feels very strange... What am I supposed to do?
"Come on in," Katherine said and locked arms with her husband as they went inside. They are the very definition of an old-time-couple. I liked that. I wish I could have that with my husband someday.
"Well, I'll leave you to it," Katherine said with a smile and excused herself. She gave Mr. Walker a quick kiss on the cheek and walked away. "Your wife seems lovely, Mr. Walker. I like her a lot," I said.
Mr. Walker watched as his wife walked away and said, "Yes, so do I." I wanted to laugh when I saw the naughty smile appearing on his face.
"Father," Trevor said, interrupting the entire moment. I wish Trevor and his father would have a better relationship. I never knew my father, and some part of me wants to fix this. I know it's not my problem, but one thing I've learned is that you can't wait for a problem to solve itself. You must fix it...
As they were discussing business, I took note after note. I loved my job! I get a good salary to pay my debts and school, which I'm taking online now, thanks to Mr. Walker and I can stay with my best friends. Now, I'm never late for school or work. I do both in my lovely office.
Three hours have gone by, and I've gotten really hungry. "Well, then. I guess that's about it. Did I miss anything, Miss Avery?" I turned a few pages back. Wow, I sure had to make a lot of notes.
"Uh, only that we have an eight o-clock meeting with Mr. Conner on Monday morning. But other than that, I think you've got it all covered, Sir. You make a wonderful team with your son." Once again, silence filled the room. Uh-oh, I touched a nerve.
He looked at Trevor and said, "That we do, Miss Avery. That's what we do." Trevor gave his father a genuine smile. Wow, he really has a beautiful smile. He's all dimples and cuteness.
"Well, if that is all, I'll be on my way, Mr. Walker."
Trevor immediately got off his chair and stood up. "Let me take you home," he said.
"No, uh, no thank you. You should stay. Stay with your family," I said with a soft smile.
He didn't like my answer. He didn't like it at all. "Oh, you're leaving? But you should stay for dinner," Katherine said as she came down the stairs, beautiful as ever. "Oh, I couldn't."
"Hey, stay. Have dinner with us," Trevor said, slipping my hand in his. The shock of his skin against mine made me look at our hands and then my gaze slowly shifted back to meet with his eyes.
"Okay," I said, as soft as a whisper. I really didn't feel comfortable having dinner here. Now. Does this mean something now? I met with his mother, I work for his father... And now I'm having dinner with his family.
"Hi!" a very excited voice came through the front door. A girl. Well, she seems my age. "Hi, honey," Katherine said, getting up from her chair and greeted her daughter. "Join us for dinner," she said.
"Who is this?" she asked very excitedly. "Hi, I'm Carly, Trevor's little sister. I'm so happy to finally meet you. He's told us so much." Before I could say something, she grabbed me in a hug and squeezed. Did he tell his family about me?
"Hi, Carly. I'm so happy to meet you too. I'm Amabel."
"She's even more beautiful in person than how you described, big brother," she said, winking at Trevor while standing in front of me. A red, hot blush made its way to my cheeks. I love this girl. I could feel the nervous atmosphere Trevor gave off behind me. I loved that his little sister could do that to him.
"Come, let me give you a tour of the house," she said excitedly and dragged me away. Trevor caught my other hand in his and said, "Maybe later, Carly. We were just about to have dinner."
Jeez, my body almost split in half. Carly's touch was rough from excitement, but Trevor's on the other hand, Trevor's touch was soft and protective.
"Okay, brother. No need to get testy. It's not every day you bring a girl home," she said and purposefully knocked his shoulder with hers and laughed. I bit my lip to keep myself from laughing. "Shall we," he said, holding out his hand to help me down the few steps Carly managed to drag me on. I placed my hand in his as he guided me down. I felt like falling, but I knew he'd never let that happen.
There's something about him. Right now, he's honest, open, kind, and... vulnerable. It's like I can see the true Trevor. He's a whole other person than just Trevor-richest-bachelor-and-playboy.
He intertwined our fingers together. I wondered why it had this kind of effect on me. He led me to the dining room again after Mr. Walker had cleared his laptop from the table where we worked. When we came in, all eyes were on us. I felt really nervous and then released my hand from his.
He pulled out my chair and sat next to me. Mr. Walker prayed and then said, "Please, dig in." He gave Katherine a kiss on the cheek.
"So, Amabel. Tell me a bit about yourself," Katherine said. Oh no! I hate that question.
"Well, I am twenty-two years old. I'm in my last year of college and thanks to Mr. Walker, I get to stay at work and continue with school from there. So, to Mr. Walker," I said in a distracting toast. Luckily, it worked. A fantastic distraction to get me away from the whole Tell me about yourself question.
"To Mr. Walker," the rest toasted.
"Amabel, how long have you been working with my father?" Carly asked.
"Almost nine months," I answered. Wow, I can't believe it's been that long. I glanced at the clock in the corner and saw that it was eight o'clock. I still had an hour before visiting time was over. "Thank you, all so much for dinner. But I really should be going. I'm gonna visit my mom."
"Oh, but we haven't even had dessert yet," Carly said with a disappointing pout. I really did want to stay longer, but my mom was my first priority right now.
"Thank you so much, Carly. I really need to go now. Maybe some other time we can get together?" She gave a bright smile and said, "Okay. I'll ask Trevor to send me your number." Oh, boy. He's going to kill her. The look of fury was burning in his eyes and damn, it was hot as hell.
I got up from my chair and then so did Trevor. "What are you doing?" I asked him. He looked down at me and said, "I'm taking you to see your mom."
