Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 - First Day

Amabel's POV

The alarm clock shouted at me to get out of bed. The excitement was too much for me last night and had trouble falling asleep. But, no matter how tired I still was, I got up, had a shower, got dressed and made breakfast.

I dropped by Gwen's room and found her still asleep in the most uncomfortable position possible. I laughed silently to myself and closed her door. In the kitchen, I took out two plates from the cupboard above the counter. The plates were white and had a theme of Paris on it with little butterflies near the Eiffel Tower. Gwen... Everything in the house was Paris-themed. Her bedroom, the bathrooms, the kitchen and even the living room furniture... And don't even get me started on the dishes...

I placed three pancakes on each plate and took out some blueberries from the fridge with whipped cream. I wanted to surprise Gwen, especially after her fight with her dad yesterday, so I decorated the pancakes with the whipped cream and berries, just like Damon and Bonnie did. I chuckled to myself and wanted to stay to see Gwen's reaction.

On a sticky note, I wrote,

Good morning. Have some breakfast! Enjoy your day and say 'Hi' to your dad for me. I'm off to work. Be home at five. Love ya.

I wore light blue jeans, with my white sneakers and a beautiful pink blouse that puffed over her shoulders. I opened the apartment door and looked back inside my home one more time before closing the door behind me, taking a deep breath and going to work.

"Ugh, are you kidding me! Are you kidding me!" I screamed at a taxi that drove off. How the hell am I supposed to make it to work if I can't find a cab. My boss is so going to fire me and I haven't even started... Even though I knew Mr. Walker isn't like that, I just had a thing for the dramatic.

After a few minutes, another taxi stopped and I got in before anyone else could take it. "Uh, Walker Corporations, please," I asked the taxi driver. His dark skin complimented his teeth and showed off his friendly smile. "Sure thing, miss," he said. I looked at him and said, "Thank you." I wanted to tell him to call me by my name, but my mom said to never trust anyone that easily. Even though this man, in his late fifties, didn't look harmful.

As we passed other cars and the California trees, I wondered about how my life would change, now that I have this job. I think Ella and I would become good friends. I mean, even my boss is kind. I have everything ready for my first day of work. I got a few notebooks, a brand new pen, my class schedules and my lunch. I made myself a peanut butter sandwich. I love those.

When we arrived at the building, I got out of the gab and gave a twenty to the taxi driver and said, "Keep the change." I was feeling generous. I walked to the doors and saw the security standing at the doors and inside there were two more men, busy with the scanning of employee passes. I felt amazing when I scanned my "ID" and a little green light sparkled. "Good morning, Miss. Avery," the very handsome man with his deep blue eyes greeted. A nervous feeling exploded from inside of me. Was it that it was my first day or was it this gorgeous man? This gorgeous man named Caleb.

Focus, Amabel! I gave him a nodding smile and walked to the elevators and pushed the button for the seventy-sixth floor. When the elevator doors opened, Ella already stood there with flowers in her hands. "Hey!" she screamed and grabbed me in a tight hug and handed me the flowers. "Hey! Oh, thank you so much." I took the flowers and walked behind the counter. I put my bag down and then Ella stood there, with her arms crossed over her chest and looked at me.

"What? Is something wrong?" I asked, already knowing that I screwed something up. Oh, Amabel...

"Nothing. It's just that - uhm - you have your own desk, since you are Mr. Walker's personal assistant. Come on, I'll show you."

I followed her until she stopped in a little corner with a beautiful white desk, forming an 'L' just like Mr. Walker's desk. I have my own little office! And the best thing about it was the view of the city of LA and the ocean. No, actually it's the second best. The best thing would have to be the white leather seat behind my desk. Ella had one too and there was another one next to it, so I just assumed it would be mine. Little did I know...

"Wow, this is so beautiful. Thank you, Ella."

"Oh, this wasn't me. After your interview yesterday, Mr. Walker had me arrange your desk. It was all him." I could see that she was a very kind, caring and modest person.

"Oh okay. And what about the tulips there in the corner and the racks? Oh and don't forget about the flower-themed calendar behind the chair on the wall and the little box with pens and everything I'll need? Who was that?" I loved Ella already. She made such an effort to make me feel welcome. And to be honest, I was feeling like I already belonged.

"Oh, oh, yeah. Uhm, that was me. Is it too much?" Ella asked shyly. I looked at her with a huge smile stretching from ear to ear and replied, "Not at all. It's beautiful. Thank you. Uhm, how do you drink your coffee?" I asked. Since she made such an effort for my beautiful desk, I will bring her a laté each morning. As well as for Mr. Walker. I should just find out what he likes.

"Oh, well I like coffee black or espresso. Why do you ask?" Oh crap! I didn't want her to think that I wanted to suck up to her, though I really wanted her to like me. I wanted her to be my friend. With all the family I've lost and will lose, I could use a few friends.

I don't want to tell her that, so I just answer, "I'm going to make coffee now and I just wanted to know what you would like. So, what will it be? Coffee or espresso?" Nice cover, Amabel!

"Espresso, pleeease," she asked like a sweet little girl asking her mom for candy while shopping. I gave her a wink before leaving.

There was a small kitchen room just around the corner of Ella's desk. I walked straight to the other side of the kitchen and got out two of the most beautiful mugs ever. All I had to do was put the mug in the espresso-machine. It was much faster than the ones we used at the café. Fuck. I never gave my week's notice... What the hell am I going to do now?
