Chapter 7 - About the Rakshas

I am the daughter of the demon lord.

***

I can't stop thinking about the scenario I was in yesterday night. Walking back and forth in my room, I barely even sleep. Thank heavens they accepted my condition that they would come to fetch me today.

"I don't have any knowledge about them, though." Yes, Scarlet. I should perform an investigation.

Clenching my fist anxiously, I watched myself in the mirror first. "Oh, Scarlet. Look how black your eyes are." I stroked the skin below my eyes.

Ah well. I shouldn't bother about my sleepless night off to the library.

I was walking in the hallway of the palace; thank heavens, Freesia was not around.

Those creatures told me that they were forbidden to enter the palace. If anyone comes to know about it, my Mother will be in severe difficulty.

"I wouldn't like that."

I'm a bit worried, even if I am smart. What could this body possibly do? When they announced that there would be retribution for the broken Promise, I felt goosebumps.

I halted in front of the library, on the other side. I spotted my father in the distance, looking like he was discussing something with his minister. "Father is really attractive, not just that. He is also smart. No surprise my Mother fell extremely hard for him."

Never mind that I should be researching the creatures that may take me tonight. I shook my head as I closed my eyes.

I entered the room, and there was not a single soul in this location. This is the royal library. Why do I expect something impossible?

"But it'll be fantastic if I can see some people in this place. It could be slightly noisy, certainly. But I won't feel lonely." I have my brother. However, he is so young and yet to understand the world.

I'll try to find the information I seek here; I'm very confident it'll be here somewhere. I was moving to the third section, where I may locate the Folklores and some fairytales books.

When I saw the creatures yesterday night, they were pretty magical. Therefore I bet I can learn more about them here.

I started reading literature connected to supernatural beings. I was sitting in the corner while I put my other books on my side.

"Fairy Tales,'' remarked K. Xinyi, ``are more than true, not because they inform us that dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten."

I scowled a little bit in the book, and there are dragons? When? How? Just thinking about it, is it conceivable for this era to have existing dragons?

Sigh, well. Let's have a look at the contents.

I spent my time in this place, reading these weird novels I've obtained. It's almost past twelve, but I haven't seen the information regarding the broken Promise.

Thud, thud~ my heart continues throbbing whenever I think about it.

"Why do I feel so frightened?" Should I inform my Mother instead? Uh, no. That will create a massive hole in my Mother's stability.

I already knew that the clergy didn't respect my Mother. I can't create another difficulty for her.

Sigh. Then what should I do tonight?

I shook my head, letting my fears evaporate. I continued to read the remaining books I got.

Gasped! And at last. I was able to find something related to the thing I was seeking for.

"The Promise that wasn't able to be fulfilled." seems vague, but let me read it.

-The Promise that was made to the Piskies shall not be breached. The Piskies are mainly recognized as the mild guardian; nevertheless, if the made Promise has been broken, you will have to pay it with the life you possessed.-

"L...LIFE?"

Is this for real? Why would they even do that? Are they some form of reapers? Taking souls is a bit too much.

Thud- thud-, reading this is killing me already. I snapped closed the book tightly. I'm flustered. I should look for more information, "I can't always rely on one piece of information."

There are remaining volumes here, and I shall purge these texts and know the absolute truth.

And so, I read the remaining novels I've had here.

I have encountered a technique for creating a contract with the Rakshas and monsters, but there is no additional information concerning the Piskies and Faeries. I spent much time reading these novels, but I couldn't scrap anything except the first one.

This is the good news If I can perform a contract with some Raksha. Then the Raksha will save me from the other creatures, but where can I find one?

"Time is already critical. I don't have enough time to hunt for one, and the trouble is. On the contractor side. Everything is favorable, but on the Raksha's side, it is all con."

The Raksha's life depends on its master, and he will likewise feel the same illness, wounds, and pain as his master. He will need to protect his master at whatever cost. If the master dies, he will die, but if he dies, then the master will stay.

Even if I am the Raksha, I won't enter such a pact. I kind of feel awful for them.

"What are you talking about, Scarlet! It would be ideal if you were thinking about your circumstances right now. Not other stuff."

I leaned my face to my knees and worriedly pondered about the Promise I made. I don't know what's waiting for me if I encounter the other creatures they talked about. "I'm afraid." I can only sob a little bit for myself.

"Big Sister."

I heard Elke's voice coming through the door. I lifted my head, and I saw his troubled face staring towards me.

"Big Sister, what are you doing here? Everyone is looking for you! It's already dark, and you didn't even eat lunch. What in the world is happening to you? Look at your eyes, don't tell me you didn't sleep."

I was a bit stumped, astonished, and speechless by Elke, who reprimanded me.

"Did you just say… evening."

"Yes."

I rose immediately and raced outside the library to see in the window if it was already dark. It is dark outdoors.

"Oh, crap."

"What's wrong?"

I stared at Elke for seconds.

Should I tell him? No, I can't engage him in such a mess as this one. Let me think about what I should do then.

"Why don't we eat? I'm terribly starving."

"Oh, okay."

So, we ended up eating together. But I can't eat well. The butterfly inside my stomach keeps on crouching me. I'm terrified, thinking that the time passed so swiftly.

I'm doomed.

"Big Sister? Are you alright? Is there something upsetting you?"

I can't do this. I should think of a means to keep them away from getting closer to the palace. However, I don't know what method I should use to fend them off.

"Big Sister!"

I hurriedly stood up, "Sorry, Elke. But I won't be able to accompany you this time. I have something to do! See you tomorrow."

"Sister…"

I raced as fast as I could to go back to my room. But on my route, I observed a metallic knight statue wielding a deadly sword. "I should bring that with me. Just in case."

Trying to reach the hand which was carrying the sword, it's a bit taller than me. "Please let me reach you-" I tiptoed. I was able to reach it. However, I touched something that made it out of balance.

I stumbled my butt on the ground as the statue was ready to fall onto me. Closing my eyes is the only thing that I can do, "Ah!" I shouted frightenedly.

Blag-I already heard the sound of the statue falling; yet, I was unscathed. I chose to open my eyes once again and what I saw next was my father keeping the statue from striking me.

"Father!"

"Your Majesty!"

His attendants hurriedly took away the statue. Father didn't write any single expression at all, but he was sure staring at me. He then carried me instead of abandoning me in that spot behind.

"Father. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get you hurt." but he was merely standing while carrying me.

"Your Majesty! Are you all right?" The frightened servants went on asking him, but he was saying nothing at all.

He's upset; he is utterly mad at me.

I leaned my forehead to his shoulder as I wailed, "I'm very sorry."

"Oh. Princess…" I can hear their mumbles. They sound like they are blaming me. Yes, It's my fault, but I didn't realize that he was there at all.

Father started walking. Is he going to punish me? No, I shouldn't think of that. I must be worried about the wounds if he has one. I stared at the damaged statue again. The sword was left at that spot.

"Tonight. We shall sleep together again."

"...Father!"

To be continued. . .

  1. Raksha is a form of guardian that guards the abyss. They are also bound to protect anyone with who they made a contract.
