Chapter 27 - Work

Dylan's P.O.V

Today just happened to be the brightest day of the year. I was sure no other day could've possibly been brighter, warmer and soothing as today.

Bright, warm and soothing.

I hated all those aspects. The sun shining radiantly in the fresh blue sky was a blessing for those who looked up and embraced it but, for me, they were nothing but an eye-sore because it felt like nature too was mocking me along with 'him'.

Today even more so.

On this apparent cheerfully pleasant day, nothing was going right. Every meeting, planning, discussion, outcome was a mess. Nobody did their work right and I too was now getting affected by it. At present, I was brushing up a few details for the arrangements of the day when my secretary, Giselle, walked in. I could feel her slender figure walk across the room and stop in front of my table. As my eyes were fixed on the few designs in front of me, I did not notice the small plastic box she placed before me until she knocked on the table catching my attention.

I looked up from the designs to see her disappointed face. I tilted my head in response to her reaction causing her to sigh and uncross her arms which now fell on her sides.

"Allow me to drop the formality for a second there, Sir." -she spoke and almost instantly slammed the desk with her hands all the while not waiting for my approval.

"Dylan, it's past lunchtime and you haven't even asked for lunch let alone, had breakfast this morning." -she glared at me as she finished her sentence.

Giselle Marie. Head Secretary of Schmith & Co. and also my long-time friend. This wasn't the first time that she treated me like a teenager who can't take care of himself. Needless to say, I am used to it.

"I'll eat once I'm done with this." -I replied as I brought my attention back to the designs in my hand. The designs were for the mayor's yearly banquet. The banquet wasn't scheduled for any time soon but, it is such a large scale event that we had to start planning and procuring everything beforehand. Especially with the changing themes and requirements of the mayor, even a year's planning might not be enough or have us prepared for his last-minute changes.

"You and I both know you have an outdoor meeting after this."

Giselle persistently took away the designs from my hands and made her way towards the seating area in my office while I, blankly stared at her from my seat.

"You either eat first or eat while you work. But, you have to eat. So which do you choose to do?" -as she spoke she held the file up in the air and moved it side-to-side.

This time, I was the one who sighed. I checked my watch, noted the time and got up from the chair. I was just about to walk towards her when she stopped me.

"Bring the box with you."

I eyed the table and immediately found a rectangular, black, food container near my pen stand. Grabbing it gently, I made my way towards the sofa Giselle was seated on and took a seat beside her.

"Did you eat?" -I asked her as I opened the box to a set of sandwiches that lay beside each other.

"Unlike someone, I know when to feed myself." -Saying so, Giselle got up and brought down the white screen. She then turned on the projector and quickly displayed the designs.

As I started to mindlessly eat the scrumptious ham and vegetable sandwiches, I continued to focus my eyes on the screen and scrutinize the designs carefully.

As time passed, many of the designs were rejected and yet many others had been sent to be modified. The only contentment that I received was from the filling sandwiches, and that was utterly infuriating.

Checking the time by my watch, I told Giselle to inform every single employee that they can clock out right now which by the way was, two hours before their usual work hours.

"One more thing, please let them know that they all have a meeting with me first thing in the morning tomorrow and that not one employee should be missing for it."

Saying so, I grabbed my coat from the coat rack and my car keys.

"Ah! Thank you for the sandwiches. They were delicious." -I smiled at her slightly and headed out of the office to meet the last customer of the day.

As I neared the intersection closest to Tackles, I noticed a busy body with partly dishevelled brown-black hair, hustle her way through the streets with beige heels that she clearly wasn't used to running in. As she pushed herself between the numerous people on the street, she tripped but luckily didn't fall by maintaining her balance. It truly was an amazing sight to witness.

The honks from the cars behind mine, got my attention off of the part-timer as I quickly started my car and made my way towards the shop. In another two days, another project will be complete. The fact that; that would result in one less event to look out for, made me feel so relieved.

Stepping out of the car, I was finally determined to work after a long day.
