Helen stared in silence at Eli after he asked her to stay with him. She had already stated her stance on not wanting to be in a serious relationship, to not settle down and have a family with anyone. It was her fear of being attached to someone who could change in the blink of an eye and treat her differently and to have children involved watching their parents struggle to have a good relationship.
She pictured herself hiding away in a corner from her parents when they became violent then turned their focus of anger to her and...
"Eli."
"We don't have to get married. Believe me, I know it's nothing but a chain around two people to hold them together. We don't even need to have children," Eli proposed.
"I'm sure your mother would be upset about not having grandchildren," Helen whispered, still thinking over what Eli said.
