Eli had known Josephine for a very long time and he believed he knew her well enough that she would never pull a stunt like this. He had to give Josephine the benefit of the doubt. Eli just spoke to her recently and she was saying nothing but good things about Helen and even invited Helen to her birthday party.
It would be wrong of Josephine to smile in his face when talking about Helen but then plot to kill her behind his back. Josephine knew Eli hated people who double-crossed him behind his back and she also knew he was not playing with anyone who so much as had thoughts of harming Helen. As one of his few closest friends, Josephine should have known not to harm the woman he loved.
The people around him were really showing their asses when it came to Helen.
