"I didn't know your mother would be having dinner with us. What a lovely surprise," Helen said with a lack of enthusiasm. This was the gut feeling she had when she was driving to Eli's home. She should have expected Elaine to find some way to squeeze herself into Eli's home.
Eli sighed, rubbing his face with his hands. He didn't need his mother doing something stupid in front of Helen's parents. She didn't like Helen, was she here to convince Mary and Samuel they shouldn't be together? He wanted to send her away but after she traveled here he couldn't. Any other day he would but not now. He would keep a close eye on her, however.
"She wasn't invited but she will be staying. I hope you don't mind," He asked Helen, hoping she would be okay with it. Having his mother here put Helen in an awkward spot because on one side she had her loving parents here and on the other side, she had Elaine who hated her. Everyone currently loved Eli on all ends.
