Archer was using the Mutation as a reaction to the Witch's lightning bolts but slowly he was learning how to reproduce the same effect through Magic. So step by step it was less Mutation and more Magic that was being spent on the protection, which was good since he had much more ways to cover for Magic than for Mutation.
"This boy is using the monster's ability after defeating it.", the Witch thought and increased her motivation on getting that body. "But he's too young yet."
