Knock knock. Knock knock.
Both of them were equally shocked, apparently, none of them had expected a guest. It was so late, who was it? Not to mention, their room was in the upper ground, who in their right mind would climb up the window?
Bai Shuyin immediately jumped up, heading towards the window to check the situation, only for the little dragon to beat her to it. Wang Heiyue, like a paranoid he was, stroded towards the window and pushed it open, a loud squeak rang in their ears.
Cool breeze drifted in, blowing off the candle inside the lantern. A small head popped out and Bai Shuyin raised her eyebrows at the unexpected appearance of a certain female.
"Ge ge!"
*Ge ge= older brother*
"Ge?" The transmigrator mouthed. Hearing that, Bai Shuyin raised an eyebrow towards Wang Heiyue, her expression as if demanding an explanation. So little time and they were already on a friendly basis, furthermore, he even told her where they lived?
"Wang ge!" Li Fantong called again, her little fingers grasping the window sill tightly, trying to hold on while she stood on her tip toe on a branch. "Wang ge?"
Bai Shuyin made a surprised sound, quickly rushing over to fetch her inside. How she managed to climb onto the second floor was a mystery to Bai Shuyin. Moreover, what was wrong with that stupid bun, he just stood like a dumb and not even concern by the fact that the female lead was hanging for her dear life outside.
However, should she expect the unexpected, Bai Shuyin was quite astounded by the reaction she got.
Shocked? Maybe. But amused? Very much.
Thud! "Ow!"
Li Fantong turned out to be surprised upon seeing her. Losing her balance, the female lead missed her hold on the window frame and fell down duckbutted from the height of two floors. Bai Shuyin winced at the audible thud, her own butt winced at the impact even though it wasn't her who fell. "You okay down there?"
"I'm okay, I'm okay!"
"Aiya! What is wrong with you? Why did you let go?" Bai Shuyin complained, she held onto the window frame to peer down below, checking if Li Fantong was injured or not. "I was about to grab you…" Bai Shuyin sighed and shook her head.
Li Fantong rubbed her sore rear, groaning but she didn't seem to sustain any fatal injury from the fall. Two stories and no broken bones. It was either due to the fact that she was the one inheriting the Black Tortoise, which explained a better spiritual body or she just had one pillowy bottom.
"Are you a friend of Ah Yue?" Bai Shuyin shouted, pretending to be clueless despite being aware who that was. "He is—"
A hand tugged her elbow, cutting her off mid-sentence. The action had Bai Shuyin looking at Wang Heiyue with a questioning glance. There was a moment of silence between them, long enough for the snowy-haired girl to see a hint of nervousness in his eyes.
"Uhh… Wang ge?" The timid voice of the female lead sounded softly from below, confused that no one had come to fetch her at all.
Bai Shuyin looked between Wang Heiyue and back at the window back and forth before her eyes gradually widened as realization sunk down into her. She made a short soft 'ah' sound, understanding dawned. Was Wang Heiyue afraid that the female lead assumed he already had another girl by his side?
She instantly pulled away from her little bun bun and called out below, startling Wang Heiyue. "Worry not, worry not! I'm just your Wang ge's beloved sister!"
The female lead looked up at her with wide eyes, mouth gaping.
'Damn,' Bai Shuyin thought to herself. Why did everyone look nervous and awkward at the same time? Was everything she did right this minute really out of norms?
Hearing who she was, Li Fantong immediately scrambled to her feet and bowed repeatedly, introducing herself. The female lead didn't bring up herself as a princess, just a mere merchant's daughter and Bai Shuyin scoffed inwardly.
Of course, the normal saga of lovey-dovey legend, the love affair always bloomed from something like this.
Bai Shuyin decided to push the situation and spoke. "The night is calm and the moonlight is good." Her eyes crinkled up in crescents and said encouragingly. "Why don't you take your little friend here for a night stroll?"
Wang Heiyue tilted his head up slightly. She was still half a head taller than him, but she knew he would catch up in a few years time. The dragon was silent, presumably wondering why she was suggesting that.
"Go on, don't make her wait," Bai Shuyin smiled at him. "It's quite cold outside."
When the dragon didn't budge, the trasmigrator proceed to whine a little. "Come on~ Do me a little favor, will you?"
The white-haired girl should probably reflect on herself. Why was she sending two minors out late at night? Genuinely, she could care less. Both were that kind of beings and the female lead must have guards around the perimeter.
Wang Heiyue was still looking at her, searching for her expressions. However, in the end, he walked past her and jumped out of the window, leaping through trees and down. Bai Shuyin stood by the window, hand holding the frame. She looked at Wang Heiyue who dragged the female lead by her hand and watched their retreating back move further and further away.
She let the window open, enjoying the coldness and let out a sigh of relief, even though she didn't know what kind of solace she should be feeling.
The breeze drifted in and the candle flickered as she leaned back against the bed frame to resume her book. Regardless of how hard she tried to read, there was something that bugged her, like she had made a terrible mistake during the day.
When it dawned on her, Bai Shuyin felt like pulling all her hair out of their roots. Even as a scholar, despite how smart and bright that person was, no one knew the power of beasts. They only knew how tremendous it was but never had an idea what it looked like. As a result, nobody was able to recognize it, much less a commoner, a lowlife servant like her!
People would normally assume the powers came from the spiritual stones they bought. Only the users and central government officials like the grand tutor, excellencies.
If so, why didn't the prince say so? Bai Shuyin couldn't think of a reason why the redhead prince didn't mention any of it. Bai Shuyin smacked her forehead hard.
Unbeknown to her, something slithered under their wardrobe.
