Bai Jingfei had a deadline of a few hours at most. She had to get back, do the math and figure out how this was going to work. She sat down in the carriage and headed back to the jianghu base. The whole time she did nothing but pray that the carriage would get faster.
'So I have to see if the jianghu has any books on the river. I need to find out how much water flows through it and its speed and its depth and-'
Bai Jingfei was rambling in her head till she was driving herself crazy. She was not someone who performed well under pressure.
So far she'd been extremely lucky with how things turned out after she'd winged them. She had great luck, that was for sure.
What were the odds of getting away after impersonating heavenly doctor Ming or burning down a prison? What were the odds of rainfall during your fake 'calling all gods' announcement?
The chances were extremely slim but they'd worked out in the end.
Bai Jingfei was praying for a similar miracle this time around. But in the case that it didn't work out, they didn't call her a genius for nothing. She'd cram up whatever she needed to, whenever she needed to.
She soon reached the main building, Song Yongrui's house, and in front of it was a group of maids. Not wanting to waste a single second, Bai Jingfei jumped out of the carriage and sprinted toward them.
"Is there a library? If yes, where? I have to do so much work oh no oh no oh no." yelled Bai Jingfei breathlessly. Despite not having a weak body anymore, Bai Jingfei most definitely had next to no stamina at all.
The maids had no idea of what Bai Jingfei was talking about but pointed her toward the library, all equally dumbfounded. It didn't matter though, as long as Bai Jingfei got what she wanted.
Bai Jingfei huffed and puffed and quickly ran into the library. It was much like the royal library except for it being much more open, and what looked like far more precious, ancient manuscripts.
There was one old man sitting in the room. Assuming he was the librarian, Bai Jingfei politely decided to ask him where the books she was concerned with were so she could save herself some browsing time.
"Hello mister? Are there any books regarding the Ardim river? Any local accounts or manuscripts? Anything will help. I'm in a hurry though…"
The man grinned and closed the book he was reading and handed it over to Bai Jingfei.
"Local accounts of the Ardim river, fisherman reports." he said smiling.
Bai Jingfei smiled back but impolitely snatched the book and sprinted to a nearby table, "Thank you, thank you, thank you so much sir you saved me-" she blabbered as soon as she took a peek at its contents.
"You're welcome." said the old man, walking over to her with a sheet of paper and a pen, "Work hard."
He left the supplies next to Bai Jingfei along with another book titled, "Ardim river, lifeline of the Wang kingdom."
Bai Jingfei scribbled furiously on the paper and then she was done. She had figured it out.
"There's no way I can build it."
The old man looked at her once again, now leaning back on his cushy chair.
"Why not? What's wrong?"
Bai Jingfei sighed. She could have built the dam in the modern world but there was no way to build it in this world without supplies or equipment.
"There's no material that can take the weight of the river. Or the force. Oof." she groaned as she scratched her head. Then she flung herself back on to the chair, causing it to tilt ever so slightly, but stabilizing the chair with her feet.
"Make the material then? Is it that difficult?" asked the old man innocently.
Bai Jingfei felt infuriated. It was as if this man was undermining her efforts and struggles and brushing them off with a casual, 'is it that difficult?'
Yes. It was that difficult.
Bai Jingfei felt like biting the man as if she was a feral cat but remembered she had to maintain some dignity as the daughter of the prime minister. Also in this era, if she bit someone they would probably exorcise her or treat her for rabies.
She thought for a second before an alarm went off in her head. It wasn't that hard.
She was Bai Jingfei. She could make TNT out of cat poop if needed. What was so hard about making some cement or something like that. She had all her sketches ready for action too.
If needed she would simply vaporize the entire river. That would only take her an hour.
'Why is it so much harder to be a good person? I could simply destroy the river or maybe bury it but that would be mean. I'll try my best but…'
She grinned knowing her morals wouldn't be able to hold her back, since they weren't exactly moral morals.
She rubbed her hands together in glee, her confidence completely renewed.
The old man stared at her curiously but turned away at the end, laughing at her newfound energy and spirit.
"Imma Build the Damn Dam!" she yelled.
