As kids, they always believed that this house was inhabited by spirits who did not kill them because they were honest, little kids who listened to their parents. Abby, Winston and Jennifer had come up with their own theory which said that if you always spoke the truth, did not steal other people's food and did all the chores, the spirits will never hurt you. They even gave proof.
Once upon a time, Winston had not done his homework before he came out to play. He had lied to everyone that his homework was complete. That day he had fallen off the stairs and bruised his knee. They believed that the spirit had pushed him off the stairs. Winston swore that someone had pushed him but no one was there because Abby and Jennifer were hiding and no one else was there in the house. Winston also said that he saw a black shadow while he was falling off the stairs.
Jennifer was laughing her heart out. All the spirits, all the ghosts were nothing but Adrian and James messing with them. "Winston was pushed off the stairs by James." Adrian revealed. "He never really liked him." Jennifer laughed at the irony of the situation. Winston and James were kids. They did not know each other and still hated each other. Winston never really wanted to come to the Haunted house because he believed that the "Spirits" messed with him. Abby and Jennifer used to drag him here and James really did mess with him.
"I really can't believe that. You know as kids we used to rack our brain searching for all the ways to catch a ghost in all the paranormalcy books we could find. We even tried some but they didn't work." Jennifer was laughing so heartily until she heard a loud shriek come from inside the house. She got instantly alarmed as the owner of the voice was James. Adrian and Jennifer sprinted towards the door of the house and banged it until it opened.
The old wooden door literally fell off its hinges as Adrian and Jennifer barged their way to the place where James was standing with the locker opened in his hands, trembling head to toe. Adrian's mafia instinct kicked in and he rushed to grab him before James lost control of his body and fainted in Adrian's arms. Jennifer hurried to catch the locker that fell from his grip right after Adrian. Within a minute, James was laying on the floor right next to Abby and the locker was in Jennifer's hands so looked at Adrian cluelessly.
Even through Jennifer was quick in panic situations, she wasn't used to what it felt like to respond on a nerve. She needed time to process information, plan it and then take action unlike Adrian who was so used to things like these. Adrian didn't even spare Jennifer a look. He laid James on the floor and tried to search for his pulse. "Stop! He isn't dead." Jennifer kicked into the present from her zoned out state. "Then what do you do when someone faints. My best friend has fainted. Should I call 911?" Adrian panicked.
He was bad with emotion and he knew it! It was showing and he knew it! Jennifer laid James head onto her lap and then slowly loosened his cuffs, his belt and all other types of restrictive clothing he was wearing. Within a few minutes, James regained consciousness. She made him sit, slowly and told him to breathe. "1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. Breathe with me!"
When Jennifer was tending to James, Adrian and gone over to take a look at the locker. The contents of the locker hot him emotional. Inside the locker was a beautiful ring and a note that said as follows…
To my happiness and my joy,
Today, you did something. Wasn't too luxurious. Wasn't too expensive but it touched my heart in all the places. Made me forget my troubles. My suffering. Past and present. The memory with the you was the best memory of my entire life. We are very young. Honestly, I can't even tell if this is real but today I learnt something very important. The difference between infatuation and love. My words are not deep neither am I a writer but you made me realize what love was. Love is when you are happy and you want to see a certain person. Love is when you are sad and you want to see a certain person. Love is when you succeed at something and you want to see a certain person. Love is when you failed at something but you want to see a certain person. Love is wanting to spend the rest eternity with them and then realizing you are only human but the person who makes you human is that very person who you assume to be an angel. So, to my angel I just want to say something to you.
Life is too short to keep hoarding it for later but I'm a girl in my teens and I don't have enough courage to say this to your face so, when I turn 26 maybe I don't know if you will say it first or I will but James, will you marry me?
I'm too young to say that right now. There's a lot of things were have to go through. A lot of ups and downs but all I know is that even in my darkest moment, I will hold on to this same desire of walking down the aisle one day to meet you at its end and then grow old until I have my last breath in your arms.
Yours,
Abby
When Adrian finished reading the note, he gave the piece of paper to Jennifer and engulfed James in one big hug. It was then James finally let go of himself and cried to his heart's fill. Sobs and tears breaking through his throat wetting their way through Adrian's shoulder drenching his shirt which was sticking to his skin because of his tears. Jennifer looked at the note in her left hand and was contemplating whether she should read it or let go but Adrian's and James' reaction brought out her inquisitive baby and she opened the note.
After reading the note, Jennifer could feel her eyes brim up with tears.
