Chapter 12 - Teams

It's been three days since the duel. The class went on like normal and they had training in the afternoon.

Zane had been researching how to write stronger runes to his bullets. Currently, he made two new types of bullets. The first one is Swift Bullet. As its name states, they are fast but he had only increased the speed two-folds.

The other would remain a secret for now.

In the training ground,

"Alright, Quiet down, we'll start shortly," Mr Holt announced.

Today, all recruits will be assigned to a team of 5. Slayers would usually perform tasks in teams.

A team must consist of at least one vanguard, defender and ranger. Other positions such as a scout and supporter are optional and depend on the situation. A team can have more than one member with the same position and one person can have more than one position.

A vanguard is the main offence of the team, they will usually be responsible for dealing damage at close range. Thus, giving them the name, Sword of the team.

A defender or better known as a tanker will attract the enemies attention and hold them off for others to attack. The defender is responsible for the team's defences. Thus, they are known as the shield of the team.

A ranger will aid his allies in battle from distance. Rangers should be able to coordinate their team through the battlefield. Rangers also guide their teams in dungeons or ruins. Thus, known as the eye of the team.

A scout will be responsible for scouting. They will observe enemies and the environment before the team arrives. Scouts will also infiltrate monster colonies and attack beforehand depending on the situation.

A supporter will aid others in combat and will usually not engage in combat. They are to be equipped with skills or magic to heal injured allies, buff their team or debuff enemies.

"Now then, I'll be assigning your teams. Each team will be responsible for choosing their members position and a leader. We have arranged your groups to have all ranges of weapons so remember that each team must have at least one vanguard, defender and ranger. Your position could be changed if we deem you unfit for your position." Mr Holt then announced the teams.

Team 1:

Eric Gratos, Ariel Azeas, Mike Lothim, Zane Felix, Elora Alballot.

Team 2:

Yamazaki Katsumi, Nicholas Rogers, Dorian Pauley, Riva Richard, Patrizio Colombo

Team3:

Halie Sylvester, Basak Adivar, Pi Seoyeon, Rolan Semenov, Cerelia Rakee

Team 4:. . . . . . . . . .

'Team 1 huh? Isn't that the 1st ranked?' Zane remembered the first name on the ranking list when he requested a duel.

"You have an hour to have a team meeting. Do whatever you want. Just be sure to be here by 9." The teacher said after announcing the teams.

"You must be Zane. I'm Eric. Eric Gratos." A black-haired with a long sword tied to his waist introduced himself.

Zane nodded. He is not very good with introductions and since the other party already knew his name, he needed to say no more.

"Let's go. We need to assign our positions." Eric said and featured Zane to follow him. Zane followed.

After finding the other three members, they sat under a tree not far from the training ground.

"Why don't we introduce ourselves. We will say a little about ourselves and what position we'd like to take. I'll go first." Eric started to introduce himself to everyone.

"My name is Eric Gratos. I like hiking. I don't like. . . hmmm. . waiting in line? I would like to be the vanguard."

Next was the turn of the brown-haired girl. She had a bow in her hand.

"I'm Ariel Azeas. I like cooking. I don't dislike anything. I'd like to be a ranger."

Then, it was the red-headed boy's turn. He had the biggest built out of all of them. He had a pair of gauntlets hanging around his neck.

"The names Mike Lothim. I like fighting. I don't like tests. I wouldn't mind being the defender." he said enthusiastically.

After that, it was a black-haired girl with spectacles. She had a spear lying on the grass beside her.

"I'm Elora Alballot. I like reading. I don't like loud noises. I'd like to be a vanguard."

Finally, it was Zane's turn.

"Zane Felix. I like food and sleep. I don't like work. I'd like to be a ranger."

"Alright. Since all the necessary positions are filled there's no need to change anything. Everyone can just take the position they chose." Eric said.

"Alright!" Mike yelled, causing Elora to shoot a death glance at him.

"Now to choose an acting leader. Does anyone want to volunteer?" Eric suggested again.

"Me! I shall be your leader!" Mike announced.

"No! Not you! I think Eric should be the leader. You are ranked first. It's only natural for you to be the leader." Elora objected and suggested her opinion.

"I think so too." Ariel agreed

"Sure why not." And so did Zane.

"Alright. I'll be the leader for now. " Eric agreed. He didn't seem to mind it but he didn't look too happy about it either.

"Now let's talk about our battling style...." And so they continued to chat.

Back to the training ground,

"It seems you have all returned. I'll explain what you're going to do. You will be going into a low ranked dungeon owned by the academy."

The recruits have mixed feelings. Some of them were excited while some others were worried.

'A dungeon? Great! I can test out my new bullets.' Zane thought.

Then, Mr Holt led them to the gate.

In front of the gate,

The gate was green. It was at least 6 meters tall. On each side is a guard post, with two slayers each guarding the dungeon.

"Before going in, I'll explain some rules. You are to be with your team at all times . Do not engage a monster alone even if they seem weak. And lastly, wander too far from the exit.

This dungeon is a rainforest. The monsters inside resemble normal animals suchass foxes, deers, wolves, tigers, insects and plants. Some of them will look exactly like normal animals but I assure you they are monsters.

Anyways, you never let your guard down.

We'll start from Team 1." the teacher explained.

Standing in front of the giant green gate, Zane took a deep breath.

'Here goes nothing.' he took his first step into a dungeon.
