Open your window when the moon is out, and you might be visited by Whispers the clown. Big pink lips and sparkling yellow eyes; he is dressed in a frills of many colors from blue to pink. He will speak in hushed words asking you for a wish. Speak only in whispers and he'll grant you a wish, anything your heart desires and he'll make it come true.
For the children of Snuckers avenue Whispers became a source of great joy, one night Jill opened the window of her room because it was too hot to sleep, and when she went back to bed Whispers was there at her window. At first she was scared because his eyes glowed and his teeth were showing and they looked like dog fangs.
"Don't be scared Jill." the clown whispered, as his tall figure was outlined by the golden light of the moon. "My name is Whispers the clown, and I've come to ask if there is any wish you desire, just whisper it and I will grant it with nothing required."
Still scared she couldn't say anything, all she could do was look into his yellow eyes that didn't blink. After some time of silence she began to consider what the clown said, being still very curious and very innocent.
"Can I really ask for anything?" Jill asked.
Putting his white gloves hand with a long claw sticking out to his lips he made a soft shoosh.
"Only in whispers." instructed the clown.
Taking a moment Jill thought up something she desperately wanted more than anything in the world.
"Can you bring my mommy back to life?" Jill whispered.
"Of course," answered Whisper "by tomorrow morning she will be alive and well, at your front door."
Before Jill said anything or did anything Whispers vanished in a blink of an eye. Leaving the young girl to wonder if she was dreaming, she was really tired so she slept the night in peace. Upon awakening she heard a clamor downstairs, getting up she rushed downstairs and saw that her father was up and so was her mother. Looking as alive and healthy as the last time Jill saw her, he family embraced and all of them were happy to be together again.
Jill's mother wasn't sure how it happened but it was considered a miracle, news reporters even showed up, along with the police, and doctors all agreeing she is alive and the same woman that died months ago. Deciding to keep the reason for her revival a secret to the adults Jill however spread it among her friends at school. Telling them to open their windows to see if Whispers would visit them and grant their wishes. Louis being a bit of a bully said she was lying and claimed that it was probably some pervert.
Not liking that Jill dared him to do it, unless he was too scared. Wounded by her accusation Louis claimed that he'll keep is window open every night to prove her wrong. That night he did just that, only secretly as he feared his dad might notice and hit him for wasting the air conditioning. The moon was out and just as he was quietly putting himself to bed Louis turned to the window and saw the clown standing at the window looking at him, which was especially scary because Louis's room was on the second floor.
"Are you Whispers?" Louis stammered.
The clown put his clawed finger to his mouth and gently shushed, just as Louis heard his dad yell upstairs.
"Go to bed you little brat or you'll get it!" threatened Louis's dad.
Shuddering from the threat Louis laid down quickly in his bed and almost forgot about the clown. Remembering the wish Jill made, Louis hoped he could get the same opportunity.
In an almost silent whisper Louis said "can I have a wish too?"
Whisper the clown grinned a toothy, fang filled grin and nodded.
"I wish my dad was nice and didn't hit me anymore." Louis wished.
"By the morning he will be the dad you always wanted." the clown said before vanishing in a blink of an eye.
Sleeping sounding Louis awoke to find his dad made his favorite breakfast waffles and bacon, and took the liberty of ordering season tickets to the baseball game. Apologizing for all the mean things he did to him, Louis's dad vowed never to be like that ever again. School that day Louis took back all he said about Whisper being a lie, and confirmed it was all true. The following nights kids all over their street opened their windows and each night another kid got their wish granted.
Marshal wanted to be taller his wish was granted, Jenny wanted to play professional baseball and she was drafted the following morning, and wishes continued being granted night after night, each becoming more elaborate and attention grabbing. However despite questioning from police, the media, and even the FBI none of the kids admitted to what was really happening. Whisper the clown became the kids of Snuckers avenue personal genie, often going to the same kid twice in a row to grant more wishes. One kid Roger eventually figured out he got less wishes compared to everyone else so the next turn he got, he wished to be given more wishes till he got as many as everyone else.
Doing this made Whisper only go to his house for many nights, neglecting the other children who figured out what Roger did, and that made them angry.
Louis confront Roger in the hall at school one day, being bigger than Roger he was imposing over the chubby Roger, who wore glasses, and was covered in many dark red freckles.
"Hey did you wish that Whisper only comes to your house?" Louis accused.
"No" answered Roger "I just wanted the wishes I was owed, since you all got more than me."
Shoving Roger hard into the lockers Louis threatened to beat him if he didn't send Whisper to everyone else's house, kids from Snucker avenue joined in and agreed Roger was being selfish.
"Yeah" said Jenny "you already wished for a billion dollars, to be a movie star, and have you face on Mount Rushmore, don't be a hog."
"Don't call me that." Roger yelled.
Upset that they were calling him a pig, like they did before, before Whisper came to their street.
"Or what hog" Jenny teased.
"Or…" Roger stuttered lost in anger he thought of something nasty to get her to shut up and quit teasing. "Stop or I'll wish for you dead."
Uttered in the heat of the moment the threat made everyone in the hallway feel cold, even Roger couldn't believe he said something so horrible, and he wondered if he would actually do it; Louis shoved Roger hard against the lockers.
"Don't you dare ever make that wish" Louis said furious that he said something like that "that goes for all of us, if we start doing that then wishing will no longer be fun."
Everyone was quiet as they came to realize just what was happening to them and how bad it could actually be if one of them made a wish like that, even if they regretted it later.
"So if he did wish me dead, someone will wish me alive again right?" Jenny offered hopefully.
"But then what if someone wishes Roger dead in revenge will anyone wish him back?" questioned Marshall.
"Don't talk like that no one is going to wish for that." Louis said.
An argument quickly turned into a fight when someone called Roger a selfish pig, he pushed someone into someone else, and every kid but Jill were fighting violently with one another. Afraid of what happened Jill ran away from the fight just as the teacher came to break it all up, every kid involved got detention and a call home as punishment. Each kid was scared of what the others would wish for, and everyone else but Roger was especially afraid of what he'd wish for, because of what they did to him at school. That night all other kids closed their window in fear that Roger sent Whisper after them, and the next day at school they soon found out something very disturbing.
Roger was missing. School was cancelled and kids were sent home as everyone in town searched for the missing boy, and all the kids of Snucker avenue wondered what Roger wished for last night. If he wished to go away why didn't he take his parents? If he wished harm on them why did he bother leaving and why for that matter was no one else gone? Questions filled their nervous minds, but that night they opened their windows each hoping for a chance to make a wish or to find out what happened to Roger.
The next day all the kids found out from their parents that Louis went missing, the adults wondered if it was a kidnapper after them because of all the odd things that happened recently, the billion dollar winnings, sports contracts, and dead loved ones coming back to life.
"It was probably only a matter of time before something bad happened." Jill's father said before he too precautions to protect his daughter.
Going to her room he nailed shut her window so it wouldn't open and installed security lights in the yard to prevent trespassers. Jill was upset because Whisper wouldn't come if her window was closed. Though she wondered if it was a good thing, because everyday since then another one of the kids of Snucker avenue disappeared. School was cancelled so she couldn't talk to any of them, and she couldn't go outside or talk on the phone as it might be a risk to her safety.
Worried she stayed in her room as she heard day after day that every kid who made a wish would go missing, till one day only Jill remained. Her dad told her that nothing would ever happen to her and vowed to protect her at all cost. That cost however was her freedom, as the months passed and she was trapped in her house, not allowed to go outside or even return to school. Deciding to homeschool her Jill was isolated in her house and she started to think less and less of her friends and Whisper the clown.
Until one night however when the full moon was out and her parents were fast asleep, she took a crowbar and pried open her window. After all this time she needed to see Whisper again not for any wishes but for answers, she worried for her classmates, and intended to know their fates. Sitting on her bed she waited for Whisper, hours passed and morning was only a few hours away, she thought of going to bed till she saw him appear from nowhere.
Staring at Jill with the same sparkling yellow eyes Whisper the clown gave her a toothy grin and a broad smile.
"Long time Jill." Whisper said.
Jill was quiet and started to become afraid.
"Don't be afraid Jill nothing bad will happen, do you have a wish for me tonight?" the clown asked.
Considering what happened Jill was tempted not to answer and run away, but not knowing what was happening was agonizing so she decided despite her fear to make another wish.
"Please I want to know what happened to all the other kids?" Jill wished.
Smiling even broader than before Whisper licked his lips and started to crawl into Jill's room with his long disjointed legs. Walking in long, silent, strides Whisper came right up to Jill's bed, before she could scream he took her away in a blink of an eye. Opening them Jill found herself with Whisper in the nearby woods, deep inside where no one was allowed to go, because of the wild animals.
"Come with me Jill," said Whisper playfully "I'll show you where they are."
Swallowing hard Jill walked with Whisper who gently held her hand, with each step they took, the forest got denser, and the smell of wilderness became brisker and damper. Fearing she was walking into a trap Jill thought about running away, but before she could try they came to a clearing in the forest. It was a large field filled with tall grass and in the middle was a small hill with a large hole.
"Your friends are in that hole." Whisper said "all unharmed."
Jill shook with fear and swallowed hard "why are they all in there?"
Whisper chuckled softly, "because they wanted to come."
Taking her hand he lead her into the field towards the hole, frightened Jill wanted to run, but terror made her complacent. She wanted to run, to scream, to plead for her life, instead she held tightly to Whisper's hand as she was lead to the hill. Coming to the hole she saw it was pitch dark inside, halting at the hole Whisper entered ahead and seemed to vanish in the dark. Only when he turned around did she see his glowing yellow eyes.
"Come with me Jill and you'll see them all real soon."
Trembling Jill tried to turn to run, but she needed to know what was happening, why were their wishes granted only for everyone to vanish? Nothing happening made sense, so she closed her eyes and walked into the black interior. Lead by the hand she was taken deep into the ground stopping only when they came to a large underground cave alight with a pale golden glow. Opening her eyes Jill saw Whisper bathed in golden light which were coming from pulsing sacs that lined the walls of the cave.
"Where are they?" Jill asked confused as she didn't see anyone but her and the clown.
Smiling at her Whisper pointed to a sac and softly whispered "look."
Walking towards the sac she looked inside the translucent mass and saw inside, curled up floating in a glowing liquid Louis. A black cord was attached to his belly button and he had changed, some parts of him were still human shows but slowly it appeared he was becoming melted into himself like a ebony fetus. Joints fused to the mass, and over time he would become a featureless cocoon devoid of mobility or distinct features.
"Why is he like that?" Jill cried out.
But Whisper only hushed and gently put his clawed hands on her shoulder. Crying she tried to run but Whisper held her in place firmly, not letting her go once she came all that way.
"Roger made a wish so many months ago," Whisper explained "he felt bad for the fight and wanted for you all to be unafraid of what harm may happen to you all, so he wished that nothing would harm would never ever come to any of you."
Shaking Jill listened in petrified silence, unable to fully understand what was happening.
"Jill," Whisper continued "the only way I could keep you all from harm forever and ever is if I keep you in here."
Before she could say a word Jill felt her shoulders become wet, a gooey stickiness flowed down her shoulders and started to wrap around her, she tried to scream but her voice was muted. All sight, touch, and even thoughts become mutated and as the world around her and her memories started to fade away. Slowly at first, then it happened faster till she couldn't tell anymore what she was, what was happening, or have any thoughts. Inside her mindless void all she knew was the gentle whispers being spoken to her every moment of her existence.
"Safe from all harm, forever and ever." the whispers continued to say with no end.
