Chereads / Destroying the Protagonists' Halo / Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

"What do you mean he isn't dead yet? That car hit him straight on!" System 347 was wearing modern clothes and a large coat. It stood in front of Bai Mo and looked frustrated. "This damn..." It ran its hands through its long hair and tousled it up. Its pretty face distorted into a deep aggrieved expression.

Bai Mo only started back at her. Deep in his eyes, you could see the mockery, he honestly thought that this was the height of comedy. Did these people forget? For this job it's not some random rouge side character it's a protagonist. The leader of the story. Especially in a plot like this one, where there are two main leads, a male and a female. The story can go on when one of them is gone. They both need each other. The protagonist's halo is a lot stronger in a romance story than it is in an action one. Killing him is going to take a lot more than a simple car crash.

"And you! Are you even doing anything?" The system didn't have a place to put its frustration and turned to Bai Mo. Bai Mo wasn't surprised at this. Actually, if he was going to be surprised at something it would be with the system's behavior. If anyone else were to see them and were told to point out which one was the system, they would point at him. Perhaps it was because the system is inside a human-looking body. But when comparing the two, the system was more human than the actual human.

He thought it was ironic. It almost made him want to laugh.

These systems treat humans as objects, yet over time they're becoming more like the objects and the objects are turning more into systems.

"System number 347." Bai Mo spoke in a cold tone. There was a small sneer on his lips as he looked at the system. "Do not think we are working together. System 278 has assigned me my task. It has nothing to do with you, do not get in my way." Bai Mo turned around and started walking away. "Don't call me again."

The delight of speaking to System 347 in such a disrespectful way didn't last long. Because Bai Mo was reminded of the body currently waiting for him in the hospital ward. Because of System 347's interference, his plan has to change. Bai Mo was thinking when he felt a buzz in his head. He frowned as a high pitch beep resounded throughout his mind.

[Are we having problems here?]

A dark aura surrounded Bai Mo. He only answered, "No, there are no immediate problems. I can take care of it."

[System 347 tells me that there is a problem with you dealing with the rogue program.]

Bai Mo wanted to curse but he kept his mouth shut. System 347 was both a suck-up and a coward. A terrible combination.

[There is no time for you to be childish. Complete the task as fast as you can. That way it's done and over with.]

Although Bai Mo wanted to argue back, he swallowed his anger and said with gnashed teeth, "Yes, Sir."

[When the program is incapacitated, finish it. Don't waste time, I'll be waiting for your success.]

System 278 didn't give him an option. Its words were final. Bai Mo could feel the disconnection in his head. He stood in silence with his head filled with unexplainable thoughts.

Bai Mo traveled back to the hospital his target was currently stationed. He didn't drive but simply walked forward. When his foot hit the floor the ground changed into the hospital parking lot he was at earlier.

When he entered the hospital he didn't walk up to the lady at the desk. But instead skillfully maneuvered out of people's sight and sneaked up to the VIP floor. He snatched a guard's card on the way and opened Boss Lu's door.

The window was slightly ajar and a cool breeze blew the curtains. It was a nice day out and the sun shined through the window and onto the young man's face. Bai Mo thought that he looked relatively peaceful. Boss Lu's body had been washed and bandaged. His forehead was wrapped in fresh bandages and the breathing support was inserted into his nose. Bai Mo had heard from the nurses that Boss Lu's survival was a miracle. Bai Mo wasn't surprised that he was alive. Although he's never killed a protagonist before, that doesn't mean that he doesn't know how they work.

System 347 didn't seem to realize it yet, but he knew. If you wanted a protagonist dead, you can't throw in a random scheme. That'll never work. The protagonist's halo is too strong and it'll never kill him. Instead, it would serve as a way to move on the story. Just another part of the plot.

So if you want to kill him, you have to play along with it. Set up some tragic story that ends with the protagonist dead. Such as what Bai Mo was planning. System 347 was too ignorant. And System 278 just didn't listen to him.

System 347's job was to stop the rogue program from causing trouble. The one who was supposed to deal with the program was him. Whether or not they were happy with him or not, Bai Mo's reputation spoke for itself. He was perfect for the job.

Job's like this would take time and planning. Rash decisions wouldn't work. But Bai Mo thought about it. His scheme was already in motion, and although it wouldn't make sense in the end, the car crash shouldn't deter it by much.

Or at least that was before, but now that System 278 has interfered then there is no point in continuing it. Although it annoyed him to no extent, there wasn't anything that he could do. And once everything was said and done, he wouldn't care much. As long as his goal is accomplished.

Bai Mo thought about it some more and the more he thought about it the more his anger dissipated. That's right. Why does it matter what happens? When it comes to him, he's just supposed to be a puppet. He follows the pull of the strings to do his job. And he's supposed to continue until they give him what he wants.

If he was in his right mind, he would have already seen through his foolishness. But he wasn't. His mind was human. In no way would it be able to stay sane for such an extended amount of time. Although he might not look like it, Bai Mo was fragile. Deep down he knew this. But never will he ever show such blatant weakness in front of the systems. Keeping this hidden was one of his only salvation. Keeping it hidden from them meant the same as keeping it hidden from himself.

Bai Mo's eyes were dull. He just wanted to get his job done. If he can get it done, then maybe he could finally leave. He walked up to the young sleeping man and brought his hand out. A sharp dagger formed in his hand. The point faced straight down, towards Boss Lu's heart. The light coming through the window reflected off the shining surface of the blade and landed on the sleeping man's face.

Bai Mo took one last look at the man. His skin was smooth and clean. But after being in the hospital for a while and recovering from a serious injury, his skin has lost its color. The two vertical moles under his right eye looked more prominent under the dull skin. He looked sickly. Bai Mo had never gotten a close look at the program so wouldn't know. But the deep eyebags under the man's eyes struck him differently. Was this because of the injury? Or has the program been lacking sleep?

It's best to not misunderstand him. Bai Mo had killed before. He's killed many. The people he killed were humans, people who dreamed the same thing as him. He told himself that he wasn't feeling guilty. He told himself that that's how it was meant to be. To complete his own goal he had to take their dreams away from them.

With an inconceivable expression, Bai Mo brought the dagger down.
