Chapter 3 - Tunnels

"you may not have to," I say. everyone else looked at me." has Edmund ever been to Narnia before?" Everyone exchanged looks before running to get their coats. Peter, the eldest, threw my cloak at me. I looked at him confused "you're coming with us" he said as if I was stupid . "why," I said, " you don't even know me" Peter walks towards me till he was inches away from my face " you know this place better than anyone else, including the beavers. So you're coming with us." I threw my cloak on and pulled up the hood "let's go then."

"come on," I call, "he can't have gotten far" as I took the lead with Peter, Lucy, Susan and the beavers following. We all stumbled through the snow, following Edmund as quietly as we could, climbing the hill to reach the witch's castle. I shuddered "I hate that place."

The castle had never looked welcoming. It had sharp towers like arrowheads and a blue light surrounded it, making the atmosphere uncomfortable and scary. We all stopped, and without thinking I grabbed Peter's hand and gave it a comforting squeeze, he looked at me confused, but squeezed back gazing out at the castle in front of them. I saw a figure in the light of the big, open castle door. that must be Edmund, I thought, poor boy, he doesn't know what he's gotten himself into. "Edmund!" Lucy called, trying to get her brother's attention "shhh they'll hear ya!" beaver shushed the girl., Peter started to run but I grabbed his hand "let go!" he said, "you're playing into her hands!" I cried "we can't just let him go" Susan argued "he's our brother" Lucy added, "He's the bait, the witch wants all five of us!" I said desperately.  "why?" Susan asked  "to stop the prophecy from coming true. to kill ya!" beaver explained. Lucy clung to my coat in fear. I was a bit taken aback, but I let her stay there. We all looked at the big gate to see Edmund disappear into the castle. "this is all your fault," Susan said, advancing towards Peter. "my fault?" Peter asked defensively "none of this would have happened if you'd just listened to me in the first place!" Susan screamed, clearly upset. " oh so you knew this would happen?" He asked sarcastically. "I didn't know what would happen! that's why we should have left when we still could!" "stop it!" Lucy had lifted her head away from me and interrupted. I stood up with her. "none of this will help save Edmund " I say, my face stony  "she's right, only Aslan will help your brother now." beaver said. "then take us to him" Peter demanded.

As we walked back to the dam Peter held my hand again. I pretended not to notice, but I was blushing furiously on the inside. Then there was a howl in the distance. I swung around "she's sent her wolves, hurry!" We all began to run, Peter keeping a firm grip on my hand. We arrived at the dam, and Mrs beaver began grabbing things off the shelves. I let go of Peter's hand and began to help. "what are they doing?" Susan asked quizzically. "oh, well it's a long journey and Beaver gets pretty cranky when he's hungry" I start wrapping things in brown paper "I'M CRANKY NOW!" Beaver yelled, "do you think we'll need jam?" I asked Mrs beaver. "only if the witch serves toast" Peter joked.  I smiled and pulled a face at him. Susan gave us both stern looks. Suddenly I heard the wolves right outside "they're here!" I exclaim. The wolves began to rip the dam apart. "hurry, into the tunnels" Beaver said and shoved all of us through a hidden door. "Badger and I dug this. comes right out near his place" Beaver explained as he led everyone "you told me it led to your mum's" Mrs Beaver said, and I laughed. Lucy suddenly fell . I stopped and Susan and I helped her up. We heard wolf barks "they're in the tunnels," Lucy said in fear "quick, this way," Beaver said. The tunnel grew dark and we were guided only by the light of Peter's torch. I held out my hand and it began to glow, filling the passage with warm light. We reached a dead end. "you should've brought a map" Mrs Beaver scolded "there wasn't any room next to the jam!" I protested. Beaver climbed up the wall and we realized the exit was through the roof. Peter stayed behind us to make sure we all got out safely. When we were all out he and Badger cut off the exit with a barrel. Lucy stumbled and fell on something again. It was animals, but they were stone. I sighed, and my spirits plummeted. we walked further to see a stone and petrified Badger."I'm so sorry Beaver" I say as I stand beside him "what happened here?" Susan asked with tears in her eyes. "This is what becomes of those who cross the witch" A very familiar voice answered. Peter pushed me behind him and Beaver pushed his wife behind him. Susan pushed Lucy behind her and grabbed my arm. "You take one more step traitor, and I'll chew you to splinters" Beaver threatened the fox as his wife held him back. "relax, I'm one of the good guys," The fox said "yeah well, you look an awful lot like one of the bad ones," I say, looking over Peter's shoulder. "an unfortunate family resemblance" the fox replied sadly, "we can argue about breeding later, right now we've got to move," he said.  The wolves barking became even louder, signalling that they were at the end of the tunnel, and that barrel wasn't going to be enough to hold them back . "what did you have in mind?" Peter asked hesitantly.
