The sign post read " Welcome to Mystic Falls". The same excitement one feels upon achieving something or finally getting to the destination , had fallen upon Damon Salvatore. Elena Gilbert was identical to Katherine Peirce one of Damon's first lover who had been dead for over 5 decades according to Damon Salvatore.
