Chapter 1 - Awakening

After the ending of most wars, famines, and diseases, the world seemed like a much better place. World organizations began to help one another more thoroughly, as well as provide aid to other countries. For most people, the world seemed much brighter than where it once was. But that was just because they were now better at covering things up. While the wide spread media made hiding things very troublesome at the start, countries and other world organizations now had the opportunity and power to hide different things from the public. This gave world organizations the ability to do tests and studies that previously wouldn't have been possible to keep covered up. But like most things in life, the world kept moving. Peoples lived moved on, having many people forget about the issues that lied under the surface. Many countries were taking people, and making it seem like they were kidnapped or just disappeared. While the number of disappearances across the globe began to increase, the media said nothing about it as they knew nothing of it. Any government doing such things wouldn't document it, so it was basically untraceable. Many tests were involved with the study of the mind, as we still knew so little about what the human mind could do. So in an attempt to better understand what the mind really was, they began doing dream tests. It was previously believed that the human mind was at it most exposed during sleep, as it was a way for the brain to calm itself and reapir itself. Their original findings were inconclusive, so they began adding many different drugs to the mix. They gave people all kinds of over the counter medication, hallucinagins, and a smattering of other drugs in an attempt to figure out something more about the mind. After a few years of testing, they had finials thought they had got something. They gave people this new drug that would make them be asleep, but have all the brain activity of being awake. Weeks of tests ran by, and they were fairly close to making a big break. However, many different businesses and countries had spies who were working on the project. As the information spread, more and more organizations were attempting to do the same tests, and trying to beat out the competition. After they had kept the 'patient' asleep for a day, they realized they weren't getting very far. They just wasn't enough data for the results they were hoping for. So they elongated they period of sleep to two days, then three, and eventually made it to a week. By this point, many of the other laboratories working on this had also brought their testing period to seven days. As they were testing the brain waves at day seven, they began noticing an odd abnormality. Their brain waves began to shift and break apart. They saw this as a sing to wake the people up, but they wouldn't. Even after being expose to many forms of stimulants and electric stimulation, they were still asleep. On day 8, the patients woke up. But they were no longer human, and would later be found they weren't even alive. A parasite had actually hijacked the person's mind, as it had been on for over a week straight. This parasite was also using the host as a vessel, and wasn't able to speak or move very well. And while having this happen at the first location wasn't an issue, other laboratories doing the same experiments weren't as well prepared. Soon the virus was spreading, and it was mutating extremely rapidly. What were originally mindless corpses were soon forming into crazed monsters. Shortly after, the parasite began upgrading it host so to speak. As they no longer needed the higher mental functions, they cut that all out and focused on the fiscal aspects. After 3 days of infection, the infected would been seen with heightened senses and reflexes. By day 5, they were seen to be stronger and faster. And by day 7, they would shortly be turning into true infected. Their eyes would turn into one solid color, and they would actually grow in size. Their figures would change slightly, as they would optimize what was there. After 3 weeks into the spread of the infection, it had too many sources and origins to he safely contained. As the counties who used to fend for themselves were trying to help other, a laboratory would soon cause the disease to spread in their own. Resources were spread to far and thin, and by then it had already reached too far. They quickly figures out thag 1/25 people were immune to the virus, but still meant that 24/25 were susceptible to the disease. The cure was developed too slowly, and was near impossible to formulate in the first place. Society shortly crumbled, and organizations of immune people quickly formed. While many cities and countries fell, there were certain strongholds that were able to sustain themselves. Food and water became very sparce, and the value of guns and ammunition skyrocketed. A year into it, the final mutation of the virus began. People were now coming around with odd abilities, such as pyrokenesis, telekinesis, and many others. The new organizations shortly formed them into 6 categories: Heat, Mass, Kenetic, Electrical, Forces, and Anomaly. These new mutations made fighting them much more difficult, as some were immune to bullets, and others were seemingly impervious. And so human civilization feel for a second time, and thought to be the last. That was until the birth of the empowered- a group of people who were immune but only got infected after the final version the virus began to spread. They were able to fight against the creatures, which they had now deemed Anomalies. Humans were able to survive now, but not without many new problems. They found with new children, that they had a 1/5 chance of becoming an anomaly during the period of puberty. This made for a new smattering of problems, as you had no idea if your child would survive past 18. Because of this, people started having families of 10 or more. Families with abilities were seen as higher and stronger than normal humans, which they were. They were stronger, more durable, and had the availability of powers as their disposal. So what if you were born into a family of empowered, and had no power to call your own?
