Chapter 574 - Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 339. No Politics Today

Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 339. No Politics Today

The party was hosted in the grand estate of Lord Averin, one of the capital's most influential nobles. The sprawling gardens were already teeming with guests, and the soft hum of chatter and laughter filled the air.

They entered the estate. Claire glanced at Rose, sensing the tension in her posture. "You seem a bit tense, Your Highness," Claire said softly, keeping her voice low so as not to draw attention. "It's just a birthday party. No politics today."

Rose smiled faintly at Claire's words, but the unease in her chest didn't fully dissipate. "I know," she replied, her voice just as soft. "But even at parties like this, there's always someone watching. It feels like I can't relax, even for a moment."

Claire gave her a reassuring nod. "That's true, but you're doing well. Besides, you'll be queen soon, and they'll have to think twice before speaking ill of you."

Rose chuckled lightly at that. "Let's hope so," she murmured. "Though I doubt the gossip will stop even then."

The two women made their way through the gardens, greeting familiar faces with polite smiles and small talk.

"Your Highness!" Lady Elara greeted warmly, bowing her head slightly as she reached out to take Rose's hand. "We are honored to have you with us today. It means so much to my daughter that you could attend."

Rose nodded gracefully, offering a polite smile. "Thank you for inviting me. I wouldn't have missed it," she said, her voice steady. She gestured to Claire, who handed the birthday present to Lady Elara. It was a delicate, intricately designed jewelry box made by one of the finest artisans in the capital. "A small gift for your daughter."

Lady Elara's eyes sparkled as she accepted the gift. "Oh, she will be thrilled! How thoughtful of you, Your Highness. Please, come, join us in the gardens. The children are just about to enjoy the entertainment, and we have refreshments prepared."

Rose nodded again, following as Lady Elara led them further into the gathering. As they moved through the crowd, a few more familiar faces approached, offering greetings and small talk.

"Your Highness, it's a pleasure to see you," Lord Harven said, bowing low as Rose passed. "I hear congratulations are in order for your upcoming coronation."

"Thank you, Lord Harven," Rose replied with a slight smile. "It's a busy time, but we are preparing well."

Another noble, Lady Yvetta, who was known for her sharp tongue and love of gossip, stepped forward next. "Your Highness, you look as radiant as ever," she said with a thin smile, her gaze sweeping over Rose with obvious curiosity. "I must say, the capital has been buzzing with talk of your grace and poise. It seems you are handling your duties nicely."

Rose felt Lady Yvetta's words, knowing full well that beneath the compliment was a hidden question. She was fishing for details about the rumors. Rose kept her smile polite, but distant. "Thank you, Lady Yvetta. I am fortunate to have the support of many good people around me."

Lady Yvetta's eyes lingered on Rose's figure for a moment too long before she nodded, her smile never quite reaching her eyes. "Indeed. Strength is vital in such times. Especially if you have a wound or injuries."

Rose knew what she meant. She still thought Angel hurt her and Rose pretended that everything was fine. Rose swept her gaze and couldn't help but notice the subtle gazes from other guests. It was as if they were looking for something, trying to discern what the rumors had only hinted at.

Were they scanning her for signs of injury?

Did they expect her to limp, or flinch?

Rose's mind buzzed with the absurdity of it all. The rumors had ranged from Angel being too rough with her in intimacy to outright speculations that he had harmed her out of anger. None of it was true, of course, but that never stopped people from talking.

Claire, sensing Rose's discomfort, subtly stepped forward, shifting the conversation. "It's a lovely event today, Lady Elara. The gardens are beautiful."

Lady Elara beamed, clearly proud of the work that had gone into the celebration. "Thank you, Claire. We worked hard to make it special. Your Highness, please feel free to enjoy the party at your leisure."
