Look, I never wanted any of this. I hate life to be this complicated. I was used to betrayal everywhere and I had expected it…but unexpected betrayal made me feel as if a pilum had squirmed itself into my heart.
I was used to having a happy life with my mom. My mom's name is Caroline Lorelie. Now you might be asking why I didn't mention my father in this. Well, I gotta say that things started going erratic because of him. My life changed drastically…Sure, I did get a lot of powers but that went along with chances of dying every day and protecting the world from nasty invaders. Confused? Welcome to my world!
I am writing my experience so that if any of you feel a supernatural power stirring inside you while reading this, you can message our camp director. If you're a normal kid, consider it as fiction and read on and live your normal life, laughing at our destiny. But don't say I didn't warn you.
Oh, so where were we? Talking about my messed-up life and how I got deceived...Right.
My name is Mark Aegeus. I am 13 years old. So far I was having a happy and normal life. Until a year ago, when I had a new class teacher.
Normally, I was good with my studies and got my A's in all subjects, but my new class teacher, Ms. Daughley Macklefur, always found a way to put me down which gave all my idiotic classmates a chance to laugh and tease. It looked like she came here just to put me down and reduce my self-esteem about which she teaches us about every day.
One stormy Tuesday, I was in school with my friend, Taleo Hemsworth. We were sitting and going through our notebooks when the bell rang for the math period.
"Mark, get ready for math class. Mr. Morisson is a real bear when it comes to readiness," he said, his voice filled with concern.
I replied with a smirk, "It's you who get scolding from teachers and you are cautioning me?"
He replied with concern, "I don't know Mark, I feel something diff-."
"Good Morning, students," interrupted Ms. Daughley who was standing near the entrance smiling with a hint of madness while she altered her stance, resting all her weight on one leg.
"Why is she here? Does she have nothing to do except to come and torture me?" I whispered to Taleo in confusion. Taleo responded with a doubting look.
His perplexed face gave me made a chill run down my spine. And, by just looking at Ms. Daughley's face I knew the whole story. She had come for substitution somehow coaxing Mr. Morris to take the period off, just to make fun of me again and see how I react.
"Why, Marcus you have begun to ask such interesting questions," she said with a sly smile making me feel shocked, because I never knew she had radar ears and embarrassed, because I had been planning to not get caught though I myself did it without anyone's help.
"Busted," muttered one student.
"Is there anyone who would like to answer, Aegeus's wonderful question?" asked Ms. Daughley with a sneer.
No one responded so she changed the subject.
"Boys, 'tis been a hard day for all of you…so this period we will have physical education! Except for those two losers gossiping about me…Have fun boys!" she said with an evil smile. The class erupted in a cheer and my classmates trampled each other as they went out for PE, while I and Taleo were stuck with a psycho teacher.
After they went out…Taleo literally started to shiver and I could swear he was saying his final prayers. She is just a teacher, I thought, not some evil monster. But I could not imagine myself differentiating between Ms. Daughley and an evil monster.
"You have been causing problems, dear," she said with fake sympathy.
I replied with distaste, "Yes, Ma'am."
"I want you to go to the library and read all the encyclopedias in there and write a summary on each of the book. Will that be okay for you?" she asked with a hard tone that made it look less like a request and more like an order.
"Yes, Miss," I mumbled, my heart weighing thousand times heavier.
Taleo sighed heavily as he and I raced down the corridors towards the library. The librarian, Mr. Vaulder invited us with a smile. He was a nice person compared to all the other teachers, especially Ms. Macklefur.
"Ol' Mark and Tal again, I see," he said with a smile, "I guess you had a hard time with Ms. Macklefur. Do you want to read all the bo-."
"Only encyclopedias," I blurted out with a hint of anger in my voice, not for Mr. Vaulder but for Ms. Macklefur.
Mr. Vaulder with a slight hint of a smile said, "I see. Fine Marcus, all I wanted to tell you was that the encyclopedias are kept in the next room."
I replied shifting myself to a respectful poise, "Ok sir."
"Mark while you read the encyclopedias, I have a few words to talk to Taleo," he said, motioning Taleo to his office. He went to Mr. Vaulder's office and they talked so long that I finished writing the reviews and took a small nap. To find out the reason they talked about this long, I eavesdropped on them. I could make out some words but could not understand what they were talking about.
Now, I usually don't eavesdrop but when I heard my name I felt like I had to.
"…release the Creator immediately from his trap….Marcus is the only one who can," Taleo said in a desperate voice.
"We need the boy before anyone finds him, especially Ms. Macklefur, but I cannot put you at risk," Mr. Vaulder retorted.
He argued, "But Marcus is my friend, sir. I have to rescue him…if he falls into the hands of those –."
"He won't. The boy looks like a doofus, but he does not know his powers," explained Mr. Vaulder, "It's our duty to show him his way and destiny…Important forces are at work here, Taleo…the magical ones must not find him. We must act and talk carefully. Those magical ones are tricky and sneaky. After they raided, looted and pillaged our camp, I could not stand it. We must be intensely careful."
Hearing those words were enough for me, I was about to go from there…tiptoeing quietly when the encyclopedia slipped from my hand. There was a long silence and stunned as I was, I carefully ran to the nearest door.
I hid behind the door of the chemistry lab, just in time when Taleo opened the door with an anxious face which morphed into confusion when he saw that no one was there. "…..Could have sworn he was there here a few moments ago, let me check the nearest doors," he said anxiously. And then, he spotted the encyclopedia on the floor and I cursed myself again for forgetting to take the book.
Now I am in trouble, I thought, I guess I will have to probably tell them when an unexpected hero marched in (insert sarcasm), the school bully, Taro Barry Elson also known as TBE (Terrible Bully Everywhere).
"Hey, Sir Vaulder so sorry for the interruption, but I saw somebody running there towards the chemistry lab," declared Taro.
Now I am surely gonna get caught, I thought. I was desperate for a plan to divert them when Ms. Macklefur materialized out of nowhere into the chemistry lab. "Looks like you need my help, honey," she said with pulsing sympathy, "Want my help?" and I nodded my head.
She just smiled and said, "You need to return the favor, Mark. Can you?"
"Yeah, fine. Just divert them and I'll return the favor," I blurted out in a despaired voice. And then she just snapped and the bell rang.
"I'll have to go Sir," said Taleo suddenly motioning Mr. Vaulder away from the door.
Mr. Vaulder replied, "We'll talk about him later, till then, adiĂłs Tal." And Taleo replied with a smile.
The scene changed when Ms. Macklefur turned towards me with a sneer, "So are you going to honor your promise or not?"
"Pffft. What do you want me to do?" I asked with a sour look.
"Oh Marcus, Just come with me," she said in that same rich tone that gave me goosebumps. She was leading me out of the school, when I saw three people standing at the gate: My mother, Mr. Vaulder and Taleo. Seeing them made me feel as if I had been caught red handed. Three of them had very serious and angry faces, but their anger was not pointed towards me but to Ms. Macklefur.
"You will leave the boy now," said Mr. Vaulder in a sharp tone he used whenever he got angry.
"I suppose not. The boy is mine," hissed Ms. Macklefur.
My mother retorted, "He is my son, Glavis. You won't touch him."
"It's nice to see you again, Carol. You are no longer the head of camp, after your betrayal to the camp. You should be punished for this mistake," she said pointing at me, "You are not the only camp with armies. We magical ones have armies everywhere."
"June!" she shouted as a legion of warriors broke out from everywhere, leading them was a tall, strong lady.
"Your wish is my command, lady Glavis," June said humbly.
"Good, good," and then pointing at Taleo, Mr. Vaulder, and my mother she said, "Sent them to Uregos before their time."
In a flash of purple light, my mother, Mr. Vaulder and Taleo were in chains. I couldn't understand anything. I knew that I had to save my mother, friend, and Mr. Vaulder, but I didn't know how. I was helpless, this was the final straw. I was a coward, a helpless coward.
"Leave, them," I yelled in a shrilled voice. The army laughed on hearing my voice pounding their weapons.
"Don't worry, sweetie. Your Mom ran away from camp and defied our ancient rules...She must be killed for treason. You will be made our slave, then," she hissed.
"You w-won't touch him, Glavis," shouted my mother which pained my heart.
Now, I thought, now is the chance you have. I felt as if all the stored up rage and anger were materialising in front of me, I hated my life, I hated Ms. Macklefur.
A soldier slapped her. Ms. Daughley aka Glavis flicked her dagger across my mother's face and then, my rage exploded.
