Carver looked over the mission and had a slight panic. 'Enemies?! Coming!? We have to leave!'

When he turned around to knock on the door, his 'younger sister' came out. She smiled up at him.

As she was now clean he could see her better, and she was indeed beautiful for her age. 'No one will hurt my sister' He thought to himself, an intense resolve to protect her and her innocence washed over him.

He smiled back at her, "Bad people are coming, we must leave quickly."

A look of fear marred her face, "The same ones who killed everyone else?"

He nodded, brushing a stray hair on her forehead back, "Yes, the same. But don't worry, I will keep you safe. Now come, we must leave."

She smiled again, "Of course big brother will protect me, he always has!" When they turned to walk, she slipped her hand in his, and they walked to the exit, which he had seen when looking around earlier.

"Where are they!!?!" Yelled a tall, skinny man clad in paladin arms and armour as he kicked at the pile of corpses. "How could they have possibly escaped our detection!?!"

Their servant, who was hunched over with a large heavy bag, spoke up. "Well sir, they may have gone out a back entrance with an artifact to hide their demonic nature. Afterall sir, he is the next in line to the vampiric throne, it wouldn't be hard to believe that he has a few artifacts on him."

The Paladin spun, "Yes Pansy, you're right. Come! We must ride!" As he mimed getting on a horse, his servant pulled out a coconut that had been cut in half. As the Paladin started looking like they were riding, Pansy hit the coconut halves together to create the sound of hooves.

As she had fallen asleep Kira, which Carver found out was her name, leaned on Carver's back as he gave her a piggyback, sometimes bouncing her carefully to adjust her position.

They're  walking on a gravel path that cut through the forest, but is slightly overgrown itself. So it wasn't easy, but it showed a definite direction that would eventually reach some form of settlement.

Three hours of walking later. . .

They finally emerged from the forest, on top of the hill Carver spotted a town that had pretty sizable wooden walls surrounding it.

As his destination was in sight, he sped his pace up a little. Kira groggily spoke, finally awake.

"Big brother, are we going to that place on the hill?" He could feel her adjust herself to be more comfortable, then rap her arms around his neck.

"Yes Kira, we're going to stay there for a while since the castle is destroyed." He responded, almost all the way to the gates.

Before Kira could say anything more, a voice yelled down from the walls. "Halt in the name of the lord of the western border! State your name and business!"

Carver stopped. "Carver and Kira!" He yelled back, "Siblings fleeing the woods and seeking refuge!"

There was a pause. "What were you doing in the woods with no protection, young ones?"

Carver thought quickly before responding, "Our parents were taking us on an outing, after getting lost we were attacked. We are all that's left, and are hoping for some hospitality from your fair town, if this is too much to ask we will continue on."

The guard responded almost immediately, "No, no problem at all, come in young ones, you can join me at my fire, and when my watch is done you can stay with my family and I this night."

As the doors opened, Carver smiled, "You hear that Kira? Fire and beds. We are going to be safe tonight."

She smiled as well, "Of course brother, people are always nice to me."

Carver chuckled before walking through the gates. As they closed behind them he was called by the voice from the wall.

"Here boy! Bring your sister and come to the fire." A man was waving at them from one of the few illuminated areas, not that Carver needed illumination to see clearly.

He set Kira down when they got there, and they took a seat by the fire, warming their hands.

"So, since you have survived those forests without any protection after your parents were killed, my condolences by the way, you must have some sort of training? Magical or otherwise, eh?" The man said, passing them each a skewer of meat that had just finished cooking.

Carver smiled as Kira ravenously attacked the skewer, and responded to the man, "Not really, we didn't encounter anything on our trip. We found a path and stuck to it."

The man frowned, "Really? But even on the paths you should have been attacked at least once."

Carver nodded, "Nothing came near us." Seeing Kira finish her skewer and look at his hungrily, he passed it to her.

The man smiled, "Your brother cares about you a whole lot eh little one?"

Kira stopped, looking at the man, speaking between chewing she responded. "Well, *chew* yah. Big *chew* brother has always taken good care *chew* of me. *chew* Mother and father were always *chew* doing this or that, so it's really been *chew* just us even before *chew* they died." She beamed up at Carver.

After rounds of discussion, eventually the man's watch was over.

"Follow me, I've got some guest rooms, so you can each have a room."

Kira protested almost immediately, "What if brother needs to protect me? If I'm in a different room he can't! I'm sleeping with brother." She grabbed Carvers arm.

The man paused, "You, er, shouldn't have to worry about being attacked."

Carver nodded, "You hear him K? You should be fine in your own room. If you need me I'll be down the hall, so you don't have to worry."

She pouted, but agreed.

Shortly thereafter they reached a dilapidated two story building. "Home sweet home. I'll show you to your rooms, then see you in the morning."
