A long time ago, in the house of a hard-working young farmer, there was nothing at home to eat; so the farmer decided to go to his farm to dig some yam tubers to sell in the market and he would then have some money to buy food for the family. Just as he began to dig the heaps, he heard a voice saying, "please don't dig me up, leave me alone. I don't want to be disturbed".
The farmer looked up, wondering who said so. Then, his dog, which followed him to the farm opened its mouth and said, ''you don't know who spoke? It was one of the yams. I don't know which one spoke, but I expect it must be the one you are digging up".
The farmer was frightened and angry. He was surprised that the dog spoke like a human being. He picked up a stick and began to chase the dog, but the stick also shouted, " stop this nonsense! Put me down at once. How can you use me to whip a friend? "
Then, the farmer began to tremble with fear. He fearfully and quickly dropped the stick, and it fell on a stone.
"Take that stick off me" the stone cried painfully. At that, the farmer rushed back to the village to report his experience to somebody, at least, to his best friend.
On the way, he ran past a fisherman carrying a basket of fish. Feeling concerned, the fisherman inquired, " farmer, farmer, why are you running? Why are you in a hurry?"
The farmer told him the story about the speaking yam, the dog, the stick, and the stone;the fisherman laughed and laughed.
