Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

After listening to Lewis's words, Godfrey aimed a Tranter revolver at Lewis's head. He exclaimed, "My peace in London came to an end thanks to you!"

"Your peace wasn't others' peace," Lewis argued. "Your murders, your leadership over Whitechapel... Think about the families of those women you slaughtered. Do you think they're having their peace of mind?"

"I couldn't care less about them!" Godfrey shouted at Lewis.

Lewis shouted back, "Your greed and lust have consumed your mind, Godfrey!"

"YOU'RE WRONG!!!"

Godfrey's anger had gone out of control and Lewis noticed it. He thought of it as a window to escape from his aim.

He swiftly reached his hand to the gun and bent the aim slightly upward. Impulsively, Godfrey pulled the trigger and missed the shot, causing a hole in the carriage.

Right after the shot, Lewis hit Godfrey's wrist with his other hand, causing him to let go of the gun, and punched him to his cheek.

Godfrey was upset that he got countered as he held to his cheek. Because of that, he decided to pull out a smoke bomb to escape. Lewis saw him pulling out the device but it was too late to stop it.

The dense smoke started to disperse around inside the carriage, making Lewis lose vision. He, of course, covered his mouth and nose to avoid dizziness.

Seconds later, the smoke disappeared. And so was Godfrey.

Lewis was stunned that Godfrey escaped from his grasp. He looked down and Godfrey's gun had also disappeared.

He murmured, "He escaped with the Tranter. At least I have a gun with me as well."

He also saw the collection of canes missing one then decided to get a cane for insurance.

Lewis assumed the fugitive ran all the way to the end of the train, that being the third carriage, hiding. He got out of the carriage and ran to the other.

He reached the third carriage and sensed no Godfrey. Then, he saw a ladder beside the door which leads to the roof. "Maybe he's up there. Waiting for me. I have to be on guard."

Lewis climbed on the ladder. As soon as the tip of his head reached above the roof, however, a gunshot suddenly fired at him.

He quickly docked while still hounding onto the ladder. Luckily, it was a miss. He shouted, "Godfrey!"

"I applaud you for getting past my men!" Godfrey, who was standing on the top of the second carriage, spoke with a shout too due to the mobility of the train.

"Thanks but no thanks," Lewis responded.

He chuckled for a bit and spoke with a voice low enough not to be heard, "How did it come to this?"

Lewis raised his head again but a gunshot was fired at him again. It was also a miss.

"Is this a joke to you?!" Lewis annoyingly yelled.

He pulled out the pistol he picked up and blindly aimed at Godfrey with his head still below. He pulled the trigger and Godfrey flinched.

It was Lewis's chance to get up the roof with the fugitive.

Godfrey noticed one of his canes in Lewis's possession. "Ah, you brought one of my collections," he said.

"Now we're even."

Lewis struggled to find his balance because of the train's acceleration while Godfrey was very steady. "Damn it," he reacted.

Godfrey saw his foe's struggle as his chance to inflict wounds on him with a bullet, already aiming and firing.

Due to Lewis's tremendous reaction time, in a split second he saw it coming and dodged greatly, swinging his body in a lateral direction.

However, his lateral dodge was out of control and he was about to fall off the train. It was when he saw the handle of the cane he was holding dismantling.

Perhaps it was not. It appeared that a thin but sharp-looking blade was coming out of the shaft.

'A rapier?'

Lewis noticed it, pulled the whole thing out and stabbed the wagon roof, saving himself from the fall. He threw the shaft away and held the handle.

"Now you've realized what my cane collection is," Godfrey told Lewis.

While standing up from his position, Lewis replied, "I can't believe you have a collection of swords, not canes. Much less they're rapiers in disguise."

Godfrey argued, "They're still canes, you know?"

Since Godfrey also brought his own cane, he decided to remove the shaft and threw it away. He made his stance and proposed, "How about we have a duel?"

"With a pistol?" Lewis wrongfully thought.

Godfrey threw his gun away to the side of the railroad. "Let's have it orthodox," he told Lewis.

'So this is what Detective told me. Fencing.' Lewis predicted Godfrey was going to use fencing style.

Fencing is a sword sport that gives one speed with a light fencing sword, accompanied by physical and mental abilities. Since a rapier is almost synonymous with a fencing sword, it would provide Godfrey a chance to use his style, in order words his experience, giving Lewis the disadvantage.

'Although I don't think I can match against him. Thank you for telling me this anyway, Detective.'

Lewis forced himself to do the same as the fugitive did.

They started forming their fighting stances as they prepared to face off each other in a swordfight. On top of a moving train.

The fight started with Godfrey going for the first strike, a big swing towards Lewis's left arm. Of course, Lewis parried it with the block.

However, with Godfery's speed he was able to tear Lewis's right sleeve and give his right arm an incised wound.

"Agh!" Lewis reacted to the attack. "You're too good at this..."

"This is what I'm best at," Godfrey boastfully responded. "I was just going easy on you, that is nothing compared to when you stabbed me back in the Thames."

"This is going to be a pain in the arse!"

Lewis retaliated with several attacks but those attacks were all negated with blocks.

As he said, his opponent was in fact too good at swords. And a pain in the arse.

'I should try reading his movements. That was rash of me.'

By attempting to read his opponent's movements, he went back and forth with Godfrey at moderate speed and endured some of the attacks leading to more wounds.

"Oh my, it looks like you're bound to lose," Godfrey spoke loudly in a tone like he was pretending.

Lewis remained standing but already had wounds on his arms while grinding his teeth and holding one of the arms to mend the wounds temporarily.

Seeing his enemy vulnerable, Godfrey chose to go for the final blow with a linear strike towards him. "Now die!"

Lewis saw his attack and then lost his balance due to a misstep and the train's speed. That made him lose his rapier as it fell off the train.

He had no choice but to be in despair as Godfrey was already laying his blade onto his chest while lying down.

"I thought you're good at fighting, but I guess you're awful at swords. Haha." Godfrey made his remark and chuckled at the end, fully confident he put a stop on Lewis.
