Daniel knew what kind of response he would get if he told the truth, namely a response of anger and sadistic accusations. However, he knew what Uncle Ted was like, he was a tough guy with a straightforward system of thinking. But even so, Daniel never lied.
"What's wrong, Ted?" The adults lurking from afar finally got up. They also seemed startled by the shrill volume of Uncle Ted's voice.
"Hey, Ted, calm down. What is it? Everyone is curious because of you." Heck dry jokes. His goal of making comedy amidst suspense didn't work. Instead, he created another tension with his shrill jokes and similar shouts and then roars.
Everyone brave enough now surrounded Uncle Ted. They grimaced like turkeys.
"I'm giving you a chance, Dan. Say something that makes sense." Uncle Ted was still looking for an answer that had already been answered.
