Although it sounded a bit strange, Desmond had more than one type of tendency more akin to beasts than humans. Perhaps it was due to how incredibly strong his instincts were or some other innate characteristic of him, but on more than one occasion, Desmond acted with the savagery one would see in beasts like wolves.
Part of the reason the moniker of the black wolf of the south became so popular was that it quite fit the wild grin seen on Desmond when fighting. With his blue eyes and hair as black as night, Desmond's smile was not unlike the gesture of a wolf showing his fangs.
Interestingly, Desmond shared another trait with the wolves: his sense of territory. Desmond was incredibly territorial; he was a person with a great sense of his surroundings and a great need for control over it. One could imagine Desmond's emotions becoming violent at the sight of some asshole yelling defiance from the rooftops as he stood on the rubble of the Astryd residence hall.
