Life went on and Rowena was getting used to the harsh treatment she received from the matron. Even the assistants of the matron were starting to notice that she was always on Rowena's case. They could not do anything because she was in charge and besides they did not know the whole story behind that treatment. They just watched with eyes of compassion. It was obvious that the matron knew something about Rowena although they could not ask her about it. She kept making calls to the unknown people and Rowena's name would come up in their conversation. Sometimes she would receive packages that were sent from Johannesburg. She would put those packages in a safe place in the locker of her office. No one knew what was in the packages and who they came from. Usually all the packages that came in the form of donations would be opened infront of everyone and would be given to the rightful owners ( the children of the centre). Now it was confusing everyone that those packages were hidden and after that no one knew who was responsible to get them. It was obvious that they were things of high value.
One day the matron sent one of her assistants to collect the package. Its address was from Milner Avenue from Johannesburg and its sender was Owen Miller. They were hearing more of the name of Miller lately. It was apparent that Mr Miller was one of the donators in the centre. The matron ordered her assistant to put away the present. Another that the assistant noticed was that Rowena's name was written in the package. And there was a card that accompanied the package. It was written ' To Rowena Mathebula/ Miller''. The assistant was shocked but she wouldn't dare involved herself in that matter. But she kept asking herself about the relationship between Rowena and Mr Owen Miller. One other day she couldn't contain herself, she called Rowena aside and asked her about her family line Rowena told her about her grandmother. She did not mention Cynthia for she died when she was young therefore she did not know her well The matron's assistant was left hanging because she did not get all the answer she needed. She could not even put the pieces together because she did not know what was really happening. She told herself that she would not put the matter to rest until she found out what was happening.
There was one morning that the matron was rushing to a meeting. She left the keys of her locker on the table and ordered her assistant to clean her office. The assistant found the keys and decided to open the locker. She took out all the packages and opened them carefully. There were beautiful things inside those packages. There was even a PlayStation. Something caught her attention. There was the letter that was enclosed in one of the packages. She opened the letter. The address was the one of Miller. He wrote it to the Matron, talking about Rowena. The letter went like this:
Dear Judy ( this was the matron's name)
I am writing this letter to let you know that I am grateful that I have found someone who is the last member of my family. I hope one day I will find the chance to speak to Rowena face to face. I know I have not been a good person and I even threatened the Mathebulas after I found out that my son had impregnated their daughter. Now I am left alone and there's no one in my family line to take over my estate. I am old and I could die anytime. I wish I could meet with Rowena.
Yours sincerely
Owen Miller
The matron's assistant was shocked by what she read from that letter. It was apparent that those gifts were meant to given to Rowena. She was not sure why the matron decide to hide them in her locker. She became more curious and looked for more information. She came across the letter and the photos that the matron took from Rowena. In the photo there was a baby and her mother and in the other one there was a white young man. At the back of the photos the names of Rowena and Cynthia were written and the below it was ' the mother and the daughter'. Then at the back of the one of a white man was written ' Rowena's father. The matron was flabbergasted. " All along that poor young girl is the granddaughter of that old wealthy man, Mr Miller. Why Mrs Van Zyl is hiding all this. Does Rowena know about this?" She kept asking herself. She put those things back to their places and decided to let the sleeping dogs lie but deep down she was burning with anger. She could contact Mr Miller and tell her about all that was happening. Mrs Van Zyl was selfish and cruel. The assistant decide to watch every move Mrs Van Zyl made. She wanted to know how long would Mrs Van Zyl keep the gifts. She wanted to know if she would give them to Rowena. She felt sorry for Rowena. Although she could not do anything about thr matter at that moment she felt it necessary to get to the bottom of it. She vowed to herself to help Rowena. " She is a child for heaven's sake, she doesn't deserve all this" she thought to herself.
