Eric found the world as nothing less cruel when he returned back to the palace.
It was the same endless darkness, and it was still filled with insufferable pain. He had been punished for something he did not do nor even want to happen. From that point on, the usual cycle of torment and affliction resumed. There was no freedom there, much less comfort and happiness.
Even then, there is this warmth within him - warmth that a certain someone left.
