"What the hell Carrie!"I scolded. "You just couldn't keep your mouth shut!"
"How was I to know that it was Crysta who had come over! Had you sent a signal,I would have known. But you didn't!"Carrie whispered back angrily.
If you are wondering where we were,we were in the washrooms of Mrs Riley's ice cream shop, having left Crysta to place out orders for us.
Both of us were squeezed in one toilet, arguing about how stupid Carrie was.
"Don't blame me! This is all on you!"I whispered back angrily.
"Fine! If it makes you feel good about yourself, then I'll take the blame! It's my fault! Happy now?!"Carrie whispered back angrily.
"As a matter of fact,I am! You should be ashamed!"
"Blah blah blah,Maya! Now kiss me."
"Oh hell no!"I whispered as I tried to leave the toilet.
She pulled me back in and forced a kiss.
I pulled out and scolded her for being stupid.
"We both know you don't mean that,"she whispered with a stupid grin on her face.
"Let's go before Crysta suspects something,"I changed the topic.
We walked out of the bathroom in intervals and went back to our table by the window.
"What took you guys so long?"Crysta asked as she took a spoonful of strawberry ice cream from her ice cream bowl.
I had no excuse,so I looked at Carrie hoping that she would come up with something.
"We had to help out with one of the toilets. You know,I used to work here before I decided to quit. So,as a former employee,I decided to lend my helping hand,"Carrie lied.
"What about you,Maya?"Crysta turned to me.
"Ummm..."I stammered.
"...she was with me!"Carrie jumped in with a save.
"Oh,okay,"Crysta said as she took another spoonful of her ice cream.
I felt bad because of lying to my best friend. But what else was I to do?
We ate our ice cream as we talked. Our conversation mostly revolved on work and how exhausting it gets at times.
When we were done,Carrie paid the bill and we headed back to my place.
This time,we divided to walk rather than take a cab as we usually do.
"So,Carrie,"Crysta began while we were walking. "Do you have a girlfriend?"
I almost choked at that!
"Umm,no. Well, not yet. But I think I'll have one very soon. That is,if she says yes,"Carrie answered casually.
I try not to look at her because part of me knows it's me she's referring to.
I looked at Crysta who was blushing her ass off because she probably thought it was her too.
That sort of happiness is what I wished my best friend would have.
I felt guilty.
I had to do something.
"You two should go out!"I stupidly suggested, jumping in front of them with forced excitement.
They stopped walking and looked at me startled by the idea I had suggested.
"Like on a date?"Carrie asked with confusion.
"Of course like on a date! With good food and music and candles and all the other romantic stuff that people do,"I added.
"That's not such a bad idea!"Crysta said with excitement. "How about next weekend. It's my birthday that Saturday so our date will be like a birthday gift."
"Carrie,"I said, waving my hand over her face to stop her from staring at me too much. "Is the excitement too much?"
"Not at all!"she said sarcastically and Crysta noted the time in her voice.
"Don't you wanna go out with me? You can just tell me..."Crysta said, her initial excitement all faded away.
"No,"Carrie said, taking up Crysta's palms into her own and looking into her eyes. "Of course I wanna go out with you! It's just that Maya here just ruined the surprise I had for you!"
Carrie lied but I wouldn't blame her because both of us wanted Crysta happy.
Crysta hugged Carrie and whispered something in her ear that I couldn't quite here but from Carrie's expression,it wasn't what she expected to hear.
While they were still hugging,I waved a taxi over.
"I think I'm gonna get going. It's not very comfortable being a third wheel,"I said uncomfortably.
"Where are you going?"Crysta asked once they had broken the hug.
"Home,"I answered.
"It's just a few blocks away. You sure you wanna spend your money on a cab when you can just walk?"Crysta said.
"I'm pretty tired so yeah,I'll just take a cab,"I said as I got into the cab.
The two 'love birds' bid me goodbye and watched as the cab sped off.
When I got home,I paid the taxi driver and got into the house.
I went into the kitchen for some left over brownies that my mom had made for Raya.
I was about to take a bite of one when I felt my phone vibrate inside my pocket.
I fished it out only to find a text from Carrie.
It wasn't the cute ones that she used to send me. It was a very angry one that read;
WHAT THE FUCK MAYA!
I ignored and put my phone on the kitchen counter.
It continued buzzing, probably because Carrie was still texting me.
I ignored since I figured sooner or later, she'd get tired and stop texting me.
Which she did because moments later,my phone stopped buzzing.
I picked it up only to see 136 unread messages from Carrie!
I obviously wasn't gonna read all of them.
i snoozed the notifications and played some music and I treated myself to the brownies.
I had listened to a few songs when I heard a knock on my door.
