Chereads / The Lordly Grim Reaper / Chapter 3 - Walking Towards The Death

Chapter 3 - Walking Towards The Death

"I'm never gonna date someone who has already fucked another person on this damn Earth!", as Ellen was busy cussing at her ex-boyfriend, grim, from one hand, took the Death Note out from the inner side of his black deep v-neck shirt and the other hand searching the pen inside the pocket of his pants.

When he found the pen, he held it in one hand and opened the Death Note to write Ellen's name. Just as he was about to jot it down, a strong gush of wind blew from the North, ruffling the pages. Soon after a second, the sky was overcast by grey clouds followed by the sound of extreme thunder. He set his thumb at the top of the page, in an attempt to prevent it from turning around, and gripped onto the pen tighter.

"Okay, I'm taking my words back. I don't want to die!", another try of writing the name down went in vain when Ellen kept stepping backwards until her back hit with a rock-hard surface. Grim instantly folded his wings, making them disappear in the air as they were his and it was up to him to whom he wanted to have a fair look of them.

"I-Is that big wave snickering at us?", Ellen gave grim a momentary glance before fixing her gaze back at the tremendous wave. A ridge on the surface of the water was forwarding the beach shore.

"Heavens poking fun at my broken heart!", Ellen released an incredulous gasp disbelieving what was happening with her. In the morning before getting out of the house, she checked the weather and it was all sunny. Weather forecasters didn't predict any rainstorm today.

"You wanna die! Come on!", before grim could process what was happening, Ellen grabbed his wrist and ran to the side of the shore where she had parked her car.

She got inside the car after unlocking her side and opened the door of the passenger seat for grim and gestured him to get in.

"If you're planning on to die, kick the idea of water outta your mind. Believe me, it's not as easy as it seems. Now get in for f*ck sake or we both gonna die!", on an off day seeing someone standing in bewilderment made her mind perceived that grim was also there for the same purpose, suicide.

Seeing him standing still in a state of nonplus, she stepped out of the car and walked to his side.

"I know you're not in the right state of your mind. Thanks, me later", she practically shoved grim inside the car and wasted no more time at hopping in and driving away from the shore.

After a few minutes of the silent awkward drive with a stranger, she parked the car outside a park when they were finally miles away from the shore. Her head fell on the steering wheel, hair covering either side of her face when she let out a loud shriek.

'Is she crazy or what?'

The dark demeanour that grim own scared top-notorious demons from the hell but this girl was on another level of teasing him. She should've run thousands of miles away the instant her eyes fell on the deadly, cold gaze of grim, instead she started bossing around grim.

Grim thought sighing at how he ended up with her inside the car. It wasn't that Ellen dragged him all the way there without his will. He was just panning someone inside his mind. He then looked outside the window to notice the sun shining on top of them.

The sudden change in the weather was suspicious for sure. It was indeed the doing of the old-timer, Ian. The spirit of the air.

"Where are you going little fawn?", he finally broke the ice seeing her getting out. He followed her inside what looked like a small park.

"What a brilliant start to the New Year. I thought I'd be marrying him this year", Ellen's voice came out slightly above a whisper as she sat on one of the swings in a row.

"I thought he was a man I'd do anything for. I don't know where I went wrong. Maybe he was a cheater all along", tapping her feet unconsciously on the ground, she wrapped her finger around on either side of the strings.

"But I can't believe that I was thinking to end my life because of the f*cker. I even overlooked the promise I made with my parents just because of someone who whore around every girl in the town", this time a drop made its way down on her left thigh, slightly dousing the area.

"This is what we call life. A royal unpredictable piece crowded with uncertainties", grim didn't say a word. He listened, somehow stuck for a second by the grief in her voice.

It wasn't the first time he was sent down on the Earth to take the life of someone as beautiful and young as Ellen. However, it was his first time, not fulfiling his task at the first attempt and being tagged along with someone like this. The reason he followed her to this park was that he was planning to write her name now. Upon seeing her fighting a battle with her thoughts, he didn't care any less and was about to pull out the death note when she spoke again.

"Whatever made you ended up at the beach, don't bother with the reason. Let it go. Your life is way too important than all those absurd thoughts", Ellen switched her gaze from the shoes to the person who was standing next to her.

"Let it go? Let your name keep disappearing into the thin air, for I don't know how long, as it's the reason why I was present on the beach", grim cursed Ian inside his mind for putting him in a situation like this.

"Anyway thank you for lending me your ears. Not everyone on this Earth is this great to do this nowadays", Ellen chuckled trying to lift her mood. She could either moan over her cheater ex-boyfriend for cheating on her when it was her very first time being in a relationship, poor girl she couldn't even have her first kiss, and have nothing in her hands at the end or start a new chapter of her life, closing the previous ones. She found following the latter option much more rational as compared to the first one.

"Well, this already explains I'm not from this Earth", grim smirked to himself being all proud.

"You said something?", not an actual whisper.

"Nothing", he now cursed the damn calm silence around them for being this silent.

"Okay. Give me your address. I'll drop you off there", Ellen stood up from the swing. This was the least she thought of doing for the stranger who quietly listened to her when she needed someone by her side. She could go to Chloe's place but considering the last night when she had already caused the latter too much trouble, she couldn't bring herself to her door.

"No thanks. I can go by myself, little fawn." "I'm not a fawn!" When grim called her fawn before she didn't pay attention to his words as being lost in her own misery but now when she was feeling better, her blood rushed to her face upon listening to the name.

"Struggling to keep up in this mean world, got dumped by your boyfriend in your very first relationship, aren't you the one little fawn who just happened to open her eyes on the cruelties of this world?", his mocking nature was what pissed everyone off down the hell.

"Hope to never see you again Mr. Rude", Ellen rolled her eyes and made her way out of the park.

"I would be laying in my bed, probably fucking someone if Ian had kept his chickenshit thoughts to himself!", the four-letter words were heard louder in the quietness of the park.

"Jeremy!", grim yelled as if calling him would work as a signal sending him down to earth from the realm of skies.

"What is it? Why are you yelling?", well yeah this is how they were connected. Jeremy would appear out of nowhere whenever grim would call for him.

"Arrange a place for me", he breathed out all annoyed.

"Are you gonna stay here?", Jeremy asked. He was seeing Ian playing with grim up from the skies. Somehow he found it a very interesting and fun-loving sight. Ian wasn't the only one who wanted grim to learn a lesson.

Being considerate of others' feelings.

"Yes."

Grim unfolded his large wings and in a split second flew off from the place. They were spirits. Well, Jeremy was. Above all, he was the youngest son of the king of the Southern Realm. Money had never been a problem for him. Though they never used the materialistic thing to buy happiness and needs in the skies, they were highly aware of the importance of pieces of expensive paper in humans' lives.

Considering the taste of grim, he reserved an expensive apartment in one of the luxurious hotels of Los Angeles for grim and himself.

"You couldn't pay for a better place", grim being grim, walked inside their new apartment.

"Come on Shawn. This place is one of the top expensive places in Los Angeles", Jeremy was right. That wasn't just an ordinary room but a whole luxurious apartment with three rooms, an open kitchen, a balcony with a stunning view of the city from the top. Of course, he booked a room on the top floor of the building for Shawn so that he would find no faults in this place, to say the least, worth living.

"Whatever. Bring me some new clothes as well. I'm not gonna walk around among these humans with the same outfit on", the day was spent having grim and the spirit of hope walking around the city, buying new clothes mostly for grim.

They even bought a new car. As mentioned before, it wasn't their first time on the Earth. Grim found humans utterly stupid beings but one thing he would love to enjoy on Earth was their technological advancements. Years ago when he had a slight argument with the spirit of air, he flew down to Earth and learned how to drive. Surprisingly he found all of the impatience in his mood flying out of the car. That was when he found the reason why humans love long drives. They set your mind free.

When the sun broke through dark night, Jeremy took grim out for grocery shopping.

Last night, they went to eat in the restaurant provided by the same hotel they were staying in. What if they weren't humans? They had stomachs to be filled with food. Grim went down on his knees on the bathroom floor, emptying his stomach before the toilet bowl. Seeing the tasty steak he forgot that he couldn't eat.

The first thing he thought of doing in the morning was to finish his task and go back to the realm of skies.
