Chereads / The Lordly Grim Reaper / Chapter 15 - Win-win

Chapter 15 - Win-win

As silent as the word itself, the night laid its claws in the hushed ticks of time. Considerably, the night was moving at the same velocity of the city, however, not for someone who had plugged in earphones with soft melody playing. Strolling under the moonlight, taking small steps Ellen arrived outside her house. When she reached there, a familiar figure stumbled across her sight. The lamplight that was hung outside her house above the doorway was giving much light for someone not at distance. Grim, however, was standing on the other side of the street, his body concealed with darkness.

"Shawn?", as Ellen uttered his name, he slid the Death Note he was holding in his hand back in his pocket and stepped forward. He took more steps until he was standing before her, sideways. Half of his face was now covered with moonlight while the half was still chaperoned by the dark.

"You miss your parents. Don't you want to be with them?", the half-face which was now visible to Ellen appeared holding a tranquil gaze at the latter.

"Don't be ridiculous. I told you they're dead", although the music was playing in her ears but it was a soothing melody, mild to have sounds from the other world to come across. Yes, when we have music playing in our eardrums, we feel ourselves drifting to a whole different world. A world that doesn't have an existence in reality but keeps pulling us into it like a black hole. The gravity of the world is so strong that we cannot escape from it.

"If there were a possibility, would you leave things here just to be with them there?", grim asked eyes looking anywhere but at the ordinary mortal who was left at the mercy of him. Indeed, it was the agony of time to be left at the mercy of someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word itself.

"No. I want to live."

If you asked this question to a seventeen years old Ellen, she would bluntly go with an affirmation. A year ago Ellen would think for a while before answering with a yes. But this Ellen, she wanted to live, she wished to be successful, she had a dream she wanted to live for real and all credits to grim.

Ellen didn't remember her drunk night with grim clearly but every night she would sit on her couch a vague memory would cross her mind. A vague remembrance of grim telling her how her parents would be happy to see her becoming a successful person. A vague recollection of grim apprising her how her parents would feel bad seeing their daughter suffering from something which couldn't be undone. Ellen gave these thoughts much of a time and came to a decision. She would live.

She also wanted to taste different ice cream flavours. Though not all the flavours could be of her liking, she still wanted to taste them. Feelings, relationships, emotions were all like those ice cream flavours for her. She wished to fall for someone, despite knowing that she would get hurt like everyone else in the relationship, she started dreaming to be in a cute relation with someone.

Grim stepped towards Ellen and stood right before her. Only to be a few inches apart, he reached his hand out and gently caressed his thumb over Ellen's cheek.

"Go inside, little fawn. It's dark outside. Not safe for you. Demons might catch you", he was looking deeply in the eyes of Ellen as if gazing straight into her soul.

The girl had fumbled for words. Before she could take her time to process the situation and respond, he stepped back and disappeared into the dark.

Ellen narrowed her eyes to wander them around in the night as if she was on the hunt of a deer but nothing was caught by them. She brought her fingers to touch the skin where grim had left his touch. Ellen could still feel his soft yet dark touch against her skin. She turned around on her feet and entered her house. She stripped herself in the bathroom and stood under the warm shower. After slipping into a nightsuit, she laid on the bed. Trying to block all of the weird thoughts regarding what happened outside her house, she drifted into a deep slumber.

Grim, on the other side, flew to a nearby rooftop and stayed there until Ellen went inside the house. Earlier when he came here to write her name in the Death Note, he noticed a dark figure standing outside Ellen's house when he was at some distance. An attempt to approach him went in vain since the figure disappeared suddenly.

Why someone was after Ellen? Why would someone chase a harmless human like her?

Yes, no one would dare to. Only if they were stalking the girl. And that's when his mind went wild. Wild at the thought of someone who could dare and have the audacity to come after what belonged to grim. The little fawn belonged to grim now. Not now, but since the day he was assigned to take her life. The human would belong to him until he finished his task. That's what grim believed. And now someone was trying to mess up with his thing. Only one being could have these nerves and that someone could be no other than Kol, the demon escaped from hell.

Grim stood there waiting for Ellen while critically thinking about his next step. If it was Kol chasing Ellen for whatsoever reason it might be, then grim would get nothing by writing her name now. But if he waited for the right time, he could have Kol in his hands and then he would write Ellen's name. Meanwhile, he would enjoy his time teasing the hell out of his little fawn. It was a win-win for him and he was more than just excited for this game.

In the morning, Ellen ate bacon and eggs after doing her morning routine. She was happy today as she was going to the old age home. But the happiness was soon replaced by shock when she went outside and saw grim leaning over the bonnet of his car. Her eyes widen when he looked at her side and winked. The book Ellen was holding fell on the ground as she ran inside her house and closed the door shut.

"If my slight touch has this effect on the little fawn, I wonder what a kiss would do?", grim smiled to himself and waited impatiently for Ellen to come out.
