Chapter 1 - Prelude

"There's only one way to end this, you have to return Berman's key to him" the husky mysterious voice came again, with more authority. I felt paralysed by its words. I could only hear one thing, my heartbeat. No, I can't return the key, not when I am about to find out what's going on.

I took in a deep breadth and gathered up all the courage I could then I spit it out. "What's behind the door" I asked, still hearing the quiver in my voice. I waited for what felt like forever but I didn't receive an answer. My intestines tied into a knot and I felt like I was going to throw up anytime soon.

"What's behind the door" I asked again, trying to sound authoritative but all I could hear was the silence that hovered around me. It was dark so I couldn't make out the position of the owner, the owner of the voice. I stepped slowly towards the door, trying to draw its attention.

"What are you doing?" It asked. Finally, it's back.

"Nothing, just moving towards the door" I said and continued moving, this time even more quickly. I stood before the door not knowing what to do.

If I insert this key I will only end up making matters worse. I just want to return to being me and not little Miss Juliana lost in the 20's.

"What's holding you back now miss prissy" the voice came again, mocking me. Now I'm not letting this one go.

"Firstly, I'm not prissy and secondly, I was just wondering what your face would look like when I open the door" I said and turned almost immediately to unlock the door, maybe. I brought my hand up to insert the key but before I could do so, I felt a force hold me back. I tried to make it let go but there was no need, it was more powerful. That was when it hit me, I wasn't speaking to any human, I was speaking to a force. I was speaking to him all along. The person that made me come back here, the one that could make me pay dearly for what I was about to do.

I was speaking to BERMAN.
